Simona Halep 6-1
Flavia Pennetta 7-0
Roberta Vinci 4-0

17-1

Now, the field is reduced to just three opponents remaining. Serena has a collective h2h of 17-1 against the field. That works out 94.44% in Serena's favor.

More importantly, Kvitova and Vika are IMO more dangerous than others and they are gone now. :clap

Now, the field is reduced to just two opponents remaining. Serena has a collective h2h of 11-10against the field. That works out 100% in Serena's favor.

Basically, no one left who has prior experience of beating Serena somewhere.

Credit to Front and Jhar (in alpha order) for voting no, which was clearly the minority opinion.

I'm still disappointed, though. I was certain Serena would do it.

Serena needed to reach a point where she is undefeated against the remaining players in the field, before going down. :cover

me too...she better take a break and join the tour in Singapore.I think her body got cold because of rain delay,sept.11 and mental exhaustion.I think she started seeing the finishing line and got tight...
this is the right time to go and see Richard....cry on his shoulder and regroup.
Richard is very wise ......

I think people are discounting how well Vinci played. Watch the last game where her volleys were outstanding. It was finesse and touch that won her the match instead of some brainless ball basher trying and failing miserably to hit Serena off the court. Thoughtfully calculated point construction by Vinci.

She won and that's all that matters. As to how well she played.......that's debatable. She was broken 4 times, had more errors than winners and more double-faults than aces, she also had fewer total points than Serena. She kept her nerves, kept the pressure on Serena which made her (Serena) self-implode. Serena was not hitting through the court in the last two sets and had 23 errors of her 40 errors in the second set. She played very poorly and Vinci played good enough on certain points that became the turing points of the match. Take away the pressure, history, mental exhaustion, etc and Serena beats Vinci 2 and 3. That said, Vinci won, that why the game is played, and that all that matters.

It's not that I would have had a problem with Serena completing the grand slam. It's just that Serena last year struggled a bit with the idea of winning number 18 to equal Chris and Martina. That's nothing compared to playing for the calender year grand slam. So I figured that if someone could stay even with Serena that nerves might take over. And the closer she got to the finishing the line in terms of matches yet to be won the bigger the risk of that happening became.

Vinci and Pennetta deserve to be playing the final. But I was rooting for Halep, and if she couldn't win it I wanted Serena to make tennis history. But it is what it is.
