Well, and it seems that I have tortured someone when I said why I like NADAL :lolz:

If you mean me, be a big girl and address it to me directly. And you would be wrong completely, go ahead and post pages and pages about why you like Nadal, I wouldn't object or try to find something bad to say. I am not that kind of person.:nono

You probably don't know, other people who know me longer on these boards can confirm this: I actually like Nadal, I used to like him better, ironically, when Nole used to lose to him almost always...and then 2011 happened and a lot of things changed, mainly Nadal's attitude towards Nole and you bet it cooled me off towards him. But I forgave him as I know it is difficult to be gracious when you are at the lowest points and not all people can do it.:D

Everybody had some nice stories and nobody said anything bad about other players here until you started. Hate is such a terrible feeling....I resist it hard. I always try to find something positive in anybody (unless they are the really bad guys: murderers, terrorists, etc..). It just helps my soul and my state of mind. If somebody does say something bad about Nole, I won't turn back and say something bad about that person's favorite player just for revenge. Frankly I think it is petty and ugly.

Sorry if I bothered you with my comment about Novak but I don't think I started....
And what can I say? I've read already critics about Nadal, his attitude (explain to me about it) his game etc etc. Well I usually don't critic the players but this time I couldn't help

Thank you, apology accepted. Don't mind those who don't like Rafa. There will always be people like that, or those who don't like Roger, or who don't like Nole. The nature of the beast.:D

Sorry for derailing the topic, again, I think it will be all from me.;)

Come on folks, I said I detested the "two lefty Irish yanks," and caught no flak for it. No need to be twitchy cos Carol doesn't like Nole. It's part of her describing who she does like. We seem to have random reasons for why we like players. Maybe a separate thread could be, why we dislike players, but maybe it's better to focus on the positives. There'll be enough hot juice squirting round the room come the FO draw.... :snicker

I've always liked aggressive players - the exception was probably Borg who was my "first" fave - largely because I was a young kid and liked this ice-cool Viking who looked pretty cool and was pretty good.

After Borg, I liked to watch JMac, although I wasn't a "fan" as such... However, the guy was just sheer entertainment and I loved his game.

Saw Edberg win Junior Wimbledon and followed him ever since. Followed a few swedes in the eighties - Jarryd, Pernfors and Nystrom were others. Never really much of a Wilander fan though.

Edberg was my favourite player of all time and after he retired, lost interest for a year or two before following Safin from 98 onwards.

Always loved Federer's game... even before he won a major and just loved watching the guy play tennis. When Safin hung up his racquet it was easy to switch over and follow a player whose game I loved.

Well, and it seems that I have tortured someone when I said why I like NADAL :lolz:

I don't think you've tortured anyone by explaining why you like Nadal, but it is a thread about why you like someone, so the excursion into why you don't like Novak was unnecessary, and went against the spirit of the thread.

Just as you don't want to read people's comments tearing down Rafa, the Novak fans don't want to read comments beating up on him, either, in a thread about why you like so-and-so.

I have this stupid gene where I'm compelled to root for the underdogs. I wish I could be a Yankees, Steelers, Lakers fan, but instead I'm a Jaguars, Magic and Marlins fan. :cover Curses!

Same thing for tennis. When I first came up, the tennis world was ruled by Borg, Connors and McEnroe. So naturally I rooted for the No. 4~6 (Gerulaitis. Tanner and Vilas). Then Mats Wilander came up and he was my favorite until the 90s. The it was Courier. Then my underdog gene kicked in when it saw Agassi struggling against Sampras. Then it was Roddick. Don't mention the '09 Wimbledon final to me. I'm still trying to deal with that.

Now it's Murray. He's been my favorite since about '09 or so. He really pisses me off sometimes but his playing style is similar to mine. You say he has to face unbelievable odds in each and every GS/Masters against the most fearsome trio the world of tennis has ever seen in its history? Murray is my man! The Gold Medal, the '12 U.S. Open and the '13 Wimbledon titles are like a tiny drug that gives me comfort at times. My greatest hope for Murray is to somehow, anyhow, to reach the No. 1 ranking at least once in his career.

To a lesser extent, I like to root for Berdych, Ferrer and Nishikori. For the same reason I stated above. That blasted underdog gene.

atpG_murray.png

I'm a underdog supporter too. when federer was in his prime i often rooted for the other players, even though i loved federer's game, just because he was so dominant. once he was a top player but rafa, and then others, coudl challenge him - e.g. from 2008-ish - i started to like hima lot more. it's funny, because i know a lot of people love fed because hemakes it lok efortless, but the times when i've most loved him most have been the times when he's struffling and seomtmimes being outplayed but still foufht so hard and come up with some unbeleiable tennis. i like to see the players sewat - i don't like ti to look too easy.

and that 09 iwd final? surely the most heartbreaking loss that i've ever been witness to. especiallty in hindsight. because even though ivanseivic, novoatna etc had their heatbjreaing close calls, they evetnually wnet on to win wd but rodedick bever did. he played out of his mind in that match, won his two sets with breaks, lost the 3 sets he lost on close tie-brekas and that ridiculously long fianl set. he had, - what was it - 4 set points to go 2 sets to love up - missed that sitter volley? then he played amazing in the 3rd set to get to another tie-break, lost that too. still didn't give up, won the fourth, and played that ridicualus fifth. everntally lost becuase he just coulfn't move any more. eventualyl lost his serve for th first itme int he match to lose it 16-14. add to that that fed had stopped him from winning wd in 2 other finals, and a few other semifianls too, and at other grand slams, and it has to go down as the most heartbreakign loss ever. althoug at least roddick did win a major and get to world no.1 in his career. that's the consolation, i guess.

Getting back to the point of the thread..I like aggressive and all court players. Obviously Federer but also Djokovic, Haas, Stepanek, Mardy Fish, Soderling (miss both of those guys), Nishikori, Gulbis when he's playing well, Dimitrov when he's not underachieving and playing poorly which isn't too often sadly and Kohlschreiber when he's having a good day. For those too clueless to understand why I dislike largely defensive based players, just think for one minute what type of tennis the guys I've listed play and then maybe it'll become a little bit clearer as to why I dislike them. :cover

Fiero, most of your family tree of favourites is the same as mine: Borg, Lendl, Pete. Navratilova. A hatred of Mac and Jimbo, which I lost once they retired and became a pair of smirking commentators on the well-fed sofa. Imagine, if this forum was alive in the 90's, we'd be teammates for Pete! :popcorn :p :hug

Back in the day I think my favorite tennis players were Agassi, McEnroe, Connors, Borg & Edberg in that order. In person seeing them play was so much fun & enjoyable. They elevated the sport. Then along came Federer. If a scientist was going to create the prototype great tennis player Federer has all of those qualities. From the movement, the balance, the ball striking, the intelligence, the competitiveness, the style, grace & sheer effortlessness he has elevated the sport to levels where he is being correctly compared to the greatest athletes of all time. At this stage of his career he is still the "face" of tennis. The man brings in the crowds, the sponsors, the revenue & if you speak to many of the all time greats who played the game including the great women of the sport Federer is the man. Feds arrogance maybe a turnoff to some but not to this fan. He is the only player I've ever seen in person where I purposely go as high as I can behind the baseline to watch him play. I even try to concentrate on watching him move before he strikes the ball & it's something that sets him apart from all others. I suspect we will never see another like him again.

Yea, you like wimin's ramblings, mine included, don't ya.:lolz:

If you are game, you can pretend you are me and see what you can come up with. I'll let you know how close you are.

Nole aside, I like players who are handsome and funny...if they can hit a tennis ball well even better.;)

Mardy Fish was my co-favorite until he stopped playing. His backhand was such a beauty for attacking all court tennis!

I forgot to mention Monfils. Many people think he is a clown but I don't think that way, he is an excellent player, he was called "the rubber man" but unfortunately the injuries have not allowed him to go more far, otherwise he would be one of the five top players :( :puzzled
