Apparently, Serena essentially has to defend in order to retain her number 1 ranking. I wonder if she does better in Rome if she will get it back if she doesn't defend? That might be added pressure for Maria and Serena. Makes for a more interesting tournament! Not that it matters really when the French draw is made as Maria and Serena will still be seeded 1 and 2 and will be on opposite sides of the draw. I know Maria typically doesn't do well here, but I trust Maria to make it far in a clay tournament before I trust Serena.:

I favour Serena on the court at Madrid......its a hard court basically with clay on top:) high altitude and the ball bounces lower than Rome or RG.Serena with her great serve is also a plus on these courts.

I understand that Serena is the default choice these days but I really do not think she will repeat.
Why?
The crystal ball tells me.

If she doesn't defend Madrid now that most of her biggest obstacles have been removed, then I will be disappointed.

I know about Maria's H2H record against Serena,. However, Serena had difficulty against Maria in Miami, I would not be surprised if she gave her a match here.
I am not ready to dismiss Maria's chances yet.

I admit clay is Maria's best shot at defeating Serena as Maria has more time to set up for her shots. I don't know if Miami is a good barometer to measure future encounters as Maria ran out of steam pretty quickly in set 3. I was expecting some sort of resistance given her tenacity in 3 setters. It was very anti-climactic if you will. Maria worked so hard to win the first set and even had chances to make it a straight sets victory as she had Serena on the run for most of the match up until that point, then Serena took the second and Maria faded. However, I like Maria's chances against Serena more on clay as I feel Maria plays her most confident on this surface now.

Pova's best chance of beating Serena is here. I do cling to the hope that we get a Petra vs Serena final. We will see in a few hours whether that becomes a little closer to reality.
