Why not a local? - Maybe Sam Stosur can finally surprise the home crowd like she did the whole world when she unexpectedly won the US Open 2011 -

For those who's favorite hobby seems to be to bash Masha in all instances - Remember that everything can happen in a slam - Top favorites can be beaten by unexpected opponents in the earlier rounds or get injured and have to withdraw - If Masha should happen to win under such circumstances then I bet that we'll have the same old discussion about a cup cake draw and how worthless and unappreciated the win is - My experience is that Masha always can surprise and do the unexpected and yes - sometimes luck is by her side - As a 4 slam champion it's not unrealistic to regard her a top contender in opposite to some poster's big toe

You have a point, anything can happen.

Maybe the number 81 player in the world will make the finals and put a beat down on the number 1 player. It has happened before.

#nopicsneeded #memories

Only problem is that, that #81 is now #1.

My big toe is making a real push in Oz. Seriously she's a contender. She's been lifting weights trying to push out of the shadow of my shoe for years. Watch for her to climb up the draw and meet Maria in the final.

Actually, the 81 beat the world #2 at the time. That player was to become # 1 the Monday after the finals.

There are so many factors in early events, especially this first Grand Slam. Not really into predictions that much, but I will just go on a hunch and go with Vika in an upset. After a poor showing in her previous event, I hope Eugenie Bouchard makes a strong statement in the AO.

There are two scenarios as Spock would say.
Scenario #1
We get #1 versus #2 in the final and you know who they are.
Serena vs. Vika.

Scenario #2
Either of the top two seeds lose early and we don't get #1 vs. #2
But then that brings other scenarios!

So, She was , in fact, the defacto No 1

The bureaucrats have their monday morning schedule

Along with reality, Serena has hers.

( Actually " defacto No 1 " was the term used by the

announcer for Maria ) I remember because a nitpicker

brought up the same thing in a thread back then so

I went back and watched it again...and again...and again

In fact I think I'll go back and watch it again now.

The point is she had already accumulated enough points

for No 1 before the match, so in reality she was No 1

The Monday morn thing is mainly for the media.

Serena wants to tie the record now and not later in the year. She is always hungry for slams, but seems determined and focus to win another AO and to put her stamp on this new year. She sent out a message when she defended Brisbane to the rest of the WTA. The tournament is hers to lose and if she does, it will be a major upset.

Serena is going to take care of business. The draw just came out. Serena and LI NA are on the same side. This won't be a problem for Serena. But then again no one is. Vika and Maria have to fight it out on the other end. Something tells me there is a chance that neither of them will make it to the final. But we will see. Anything can happen.

Already Serena's coach is mentioning the calendar year slam. It was the same last year, and we know how it went in Oz... :nono

I feel like a 5 year old. Can't wait for the matches to begin. Who will win it all! Serena, Vika, Petra, Li Na or some unexpected maybe relatively new player. Ladies: Take out your racquets and start swinging!!

this a no brainer.. Maria dominates AO once more.

LOL. Just wait until Vika gets her hands on her. I suspect Vika has a new year gift for her called a beat down.
