When I watch Nadal pull out yet another grinded-out win in which his opponent hit more winners and clearly had control for significant portions of the match, it is indeed something akin to a masochistic experience.
As for amazement! I am repeatedly amazed by how Nadal wins matches like the one against Janowicz where he clearly looked like the worse player. He does this over and over, by being persistent and just not going away and opportunistically winning a couple key points.
It truly does cause me amazement how he pulls that nonsense off over and over and how too few players have stopped it.
Nonsense? Having a winning record against everybody in the Top 30? That's not nonsense - that's just being better than everyone. I'm not sure what you're looking for. I know you love highlight reel tennis - you even mistake an odd 3 minute YouTube flick for a whole match sometimes - so watch the next three points here and enjoy. Big heroic forehand and a Sampras-like ace sandwiching some typical defiance and brilliance off the backhand wing.
All with the championship on the line, no less.
Or skip on a few points to this and savour not only the backhand, but also that beast of a forehand that drove Novak into error. You miss whole swathes of stuff because all you see is this champions heart dominating your TV screen the same way it dominates his rivals, but there's huge levels of intensity and skill, and in no world or version of a world would I ever describe Nadal inferior to anyone who plays or played tennis. He has an immense arsenal and incomparable tennis intelligence. Plus, the essence of the competitor is to compete, and there's no-one ever understood that so well as Ralph.
Plus, "hitting more winners than your opponent" isn't a sign that you're better than them. You know this, right? Allowing JJ to implode is a master's art. JJ blazing winners isn't a sign that he should win the match - and likewise Novak. Novak is certifiably greater than JJ, but you lump all opponents of Rafa together. I remember you saying Raonic would beat him in Canada.
Three words: WTF!
