Stocks I’m less confident with. My wheelhouse are currencies and precious metals, but stock indices I play as well. Definitely not easy and best to check your ego at the door. I did it professionally but it’s infinitely harder when it’s your own money. Discipline is everything

I wouldn't even know where to start with some of that stuff. A friend of mine is a hedge fund manager in NYC and he mostly does currencies, foreign bonds, interest rates, and some commodities, pretty much NO stocks.

I had a lot of problems with it, I don't think you can successfully day trade if it isn't what your focusing on full-time. I focused on it some during a work day from home but it wasn't enough and it didn't go well. Short-term/swing trading is different but still naturally needs a lot of attention and now I'm back at a job where I have to appear that I'm working :) But I know my main issue, and it's tough to keep it in check. I don't like being wrong, I detest it.

Haha! I'll probably stay, my friend in Australia likes forums so i'll try and get him to join too.
As for my dream job, i'm a Junior Doctor. :yesyes:
Haha! That's great to know. The more the merrier. I'd love to know your friend. That's a great & necessary job which saves a lot of people's lives. I admire the medical profession though I know I couldn't do the job myself as I'm too squeamish.

I don't have a dream job... I have a dream lifestyle. I'm halfway there.
That's great. Your last sentence reminds me of that song though "I'm only 1/2 way to paradise. So near yet so far away".

I remember this thread back in the day, guess I should update it. I was self-employed for awhile and working from home. Never have done well trading stocks (at least for now), like poker my healthy ego gets in the way and the big losses pile up. There is of course much more to trading as I'm sure FB can attest to.

Now the real job: shitty accountant

Dream job: something that makes good money.
Your real job sounds good actually. I've been a Retail Assistant/Admin Assistant/Librarian & learning accountancy is 1 of the things people have said I should do as I did daily & weekly sales & weekly figures sheets & bought, sold, sales & purchase ledgers in the 1st few places I worked in & enjoyed it which is why I went from Retail to Admin in the 1st place. My Managers were training me to do all the paperwork because they wanted me to learn to manage but as I was very young at the time (17/18) I didn't get much chance with the staff management side of it because I got told if you manage people wrong you can destroy lives & companies don't want people with experience of the cashing up & paperwork side of things as they get their accountants to do that. People are so good at telling me what they think I'd be good at & have so many different ideas including teaching which comes up a lot. I love teaching & training people though.

sounds like your friend is a macro guy like me. Stocks are far too much work, you have to study company accounts, corporate strategy, the competition etc. And at the same time you have to worry about the stuff that macro guys look at. The economy, monetary and fiscal policy, major political and catastrophic events, geopolitics etc. That's a heck of a lot of work! And all along if the company is corrupt the really impactful stuff might be hidden from you. Fk that... :D

I'm at a public accounting firm and they make shit money here in the States (under 6 figures) unless you become Partner. Some accountants that work private (for a company) can do pretty well but it is a decision I regret. Straight finance presents much greater opportunity for $$$$. I've been looking to make a move and will continue to do so in April.

Thank you very much for the information. I don't blame you. You've got to do what's right for you. You're money-motivated. I'm not. I'm motivated by the pleasure I get in the knowledge that I've done a good job & I've helped myself, colleagues & customers & left everyone happy. I like something that gives me something to keep me going. I didn't mind being in the shop when everything was new & I had lots of laws & procedures to learn. After that, it wasn't so bad when I had lots of different jobs to do to keep my working memory going but when I was just left to rot on the till that was a different matter. I didn't mind the till but needed variety. I'm also rethinking my options.

That's great. Midwifery must be so rewarding, not only seeing all the new-born babies you deliver but also ensuring premature babies get the care they need to survive. I was a premature baby by 1 month & 3 days. Premature babies are so tiny & cute but they're also so fragile & need such care.

Looking after premature babies is a specialized field in itself. These nurses are very 'special',as you said in your post they are soo fragile.Yes it is a very rewarding job.

Wow! I didn't know that. I thought all midwives had to look after premature babies if necessary. I agree that those nurses are extra special. It's great that the job is so rewarding. :0)

My job related dream would be to make a living out of literature. It is hard enough to get some books out there... this, and be able to go back to physics.

This could be the dream job for many people. This is real and not a joke . But unfortunately, only one position is available. I have no clue as to how they will decide whom to hire for the job as the job has no requirements. Monthly salary of $2,320 for the rest of your life.

I think I need to update my dream job because I think I've got the dream job now. I work in heritage preservation which involves me both doing & teaching old arts & crafts, fund-raising & archiving. Sometimes I have to dress in period clothing & show people what arts & crafts they did in the period or teach them to sing songs from that period. I've also had to look after geophysicists in an admin type role (I was like a host & made them cuppas.). They were lovely & we had an interesting conversation. It's fun & fascinating but can be quite full on.

You've got interesting customers. Now I understand why you've posted some intriguing geophysical news and questions on science thread. I hope those experts won't deny/contradict pieces of information that I posted on said thread,
