Let's say you were in the unique position of having any job you desire and you were also subsequently guaranteed financial stability. What job would you choose? It doesn't matter how implausible it may sound. Let go of reality in this thread. :)

I'd love to be a filmmaker and/or cinematographer myself. I would give anything to be in the position of having the resources, budget, and artistic creativity to create my own work. I'd also love to work with traditional 35mm photochemical film instead of digital and even use 65mm film stock. I'd love to also edit my own work and have the opportunity to work with all of my favourite living actors and actresses.

If I saved up enough money, I'd purchase a bloc of land in the serene countryside, build a tennis court in my backyard (with grass as the surface) and just chill there.

But that's just a dream. How about you, fellow frontiers? :D

Not too different from you Tsar...I would love to make a living by writing movie scripts. I mean, I DO write them now, but I do not make a living from them. Even getting them read is an impossibility. I am a musician and I have made a living being a musician, but not in the sense that Bono makes a living being a musician, so I would not mind making a decent living playing music as well.

I will give two options:

Real life dream job: I am for the most part in the career I would choose above all else, academic history. I would love to have some sort of dual appointment at the University of Pennsylvania and some coastal Mediterranean to spend the summers at.

Dream-dream job: I would love to do stand up comedy.

I like Riotbeard's format, so I'll use it.

Real life dream job: Editor at a large publishing house in Manhattan. It would be exciting and fulfilling to read manuscripts, discover new writers, help them shape and finish their books, and decide what gets published.

Dream-dream job: Novelist.

Excellent post--one that provokes a great amount of thought. Being a teacher of history and religion would be up there in terms of a job. I also would like to be able to sit around and write when I wanted and hopefully publish something. But, if it is a dream of things I can't do but would love to do, how could I not want to be a successful ATP Tour player?!?!?!?!?! Or a musician like my avatar?!?!?!?!?!? Finally, I guess deep down I wish I could sing like a Corelli, Giacomino or Domingo (or a Sinatra, for that matter)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't I be an ATP Tour pro, who then segues into operatic tenor roles who moonlights as a writer--then teaches in my later years????? It is my dream, right? :)

I'd love to be a proof-reader so I could sit & read all day & get paid for correcting mistakes. I often spot mistakes in newspapers, magazines & books in a few seconds flat & think I thought they were supposed to be proof-read & I could do a better job. I'd also be able to get away with doing something else I love at the same time which is singing.

Real job: running a financial services firm focussed on trading currencies for corporate clients

Dream job: I fluctuate between just trading my own book (which I've done before) where I focus exclusively on a specific type of technical analysis which I'm trained for. And creating an urban farming conglomerate large enough to have an impact on humanity's carbon footprint. I've actually started doing some research to further that goal. Put my money and my time where my dreams are so to speak :)

trading ones book doesn't mean writing. You are trading your own portfolio of assets (stocks, commodities currencies etc). Portfolio can be colloquially referred to as a "book" ;)

Explain "urban farming" to me.

Ha! Thank you very much for the information. I didn't know, well I knew the information supplied in your last sentence. I apologise for misunderstanding you. ;0)

It involves vertical farming in factory space, instead of the use of fields. Because the production is within the urban space the carbon footprint is lower (no need to truck the goods in, and more just in time delivery applicability), and in addition to that there's scope to farm in scale. There's also the scope to expand up the value chain into food processing, restaurants etc. It's the future, and being done in places like Holland now

Farming as in crops or cattle or both?

I remember this thread back in the day, guess I should update it. I was self-employed for awhile and working from home. Never have done well trading stocks (at least for now), like poker my healthy ego gets in the way and the big losses pile up. There is of course much more to trading as I'm sure FB can attest to.

Now the real job: shitty accountant

Dream job: something that makes good money.

Stocks I’m less confident with. My wheelhouse are currencies and precious metals, but stock indices I play as well. Definitely not easy and best to check your ego at the door. I did it professionally but it’s infinitely harder when it’s your own money. Discipline is everything
