She did change her tactics a bit. She got more 1st serves in and she varied her return position a bit and kept the balls deep. That gave her a look at breaking.

Tactics? Isn't that basically what's she's always trying to do and it isn't always clicking?

Are you talking about Simona?

Well, yeah. Anybody really.

But the problem w/ crutch on-court coaching is your opponent may change their tactics to rival the changes you've made and your coach can only come out once per set. So how do you handle that?

I think though Serena has to go for it on serve and return especially if she has no confidence in her ground game at the moment.

I don't think it's the ground game that's she's lost confidence in. I agree w/ AP. Her footwork this week has been abysmal

They're not necessarily unrelated.

There she was broken on a BH that she didn't even attempt to get in position for

That's the one thing I noticed. She's walking about and looks really slow.

And she's a set away from winning the title. So Serena!

It amazes me how quickly Serena can lose her way to a finish line so fast and find herself in a battle.

Yet she's 14-0 in her last 14 finals, as Drysdale just reminded those watching ESPN. (Ironically last losing here to Vika two years ago. That was an incredible match.)

And that match is looking a bit like this one. Serena blasted her way to a first set, Vika got more returns back and forced some errors in the 2nd. The 3rd set was up and down culminating in a TB that either could have won.

I keep staring at that number: 14-0 and counting in finals. That must be a record, no? Or perhaps Martina or Graf had a longer streak? (I'm thinking Open Era only.)
