Pliskova wins the biggest title of her life and that too in straight sets 6-3 6-1. :clap
I am sure Serena will send her wine and a bouquet of flowers. Serena's #1 ranking is saved. Serena is guaranteed of matching Steffi's record. To break it she needs to perform well at USO relative to other contenders (but does not necessarily have to win it).
All Serena has to do is win 3 matches, that would get her to the 2nd week and break the tie with Steffi, correct
NO.
This Monday (22nd), it will be 184th week for Serena. I assume that neither Serena nor Kerber is playing next week. Then, Monday, the 29th will be 185th week for Serena. They do not update the rankings in the middle of Grandslam based on points from a tournament that is not finished. So, Serena will be ranked #1 on Monday, the 5th September also independent of what happens at US open and that will be her 186th week thus matching Steffi's record.
However, to break Steffi's record Serena needs to be ranked #1 in the rankings that are published on 12th September, the day after US Open ends. Of course, Serena will be ranked #1 if she wins USO.
However, she does not need to win USO. She needs to outperform Kerber by 460 points at the US Open to do so. Serena, currently leads by 190 points. However, Serena is defending SF points of 780
at US Open whereas Kerber is defending 3rd round points of 130. So, with last year's USO points removed, Kerber is leading Serena by 460 (780-130-190) points. So, Serena needs to perform at least one round better than Kerber (if Kerber reaches SF). If Kerbie does not reach SF, doing just one round better would not do (as she needs to outperform by 460 points).
