It looks like Serena might luck out. Pliskova has taken the first set.

Pathetic start by Kerber.

You were pretty overconfidence as usual. I am sure Tossip is laughing :laydownlaughing more at you than Kerber.

Pliskova wins the biggest title of her life and that too in straight sets 6-3 6-1. :clap

I am sure Serena will send her wine and a bouquet of flowers. Serena's #1 ranking is saved. Serena is guaranteed of matching Steffi's record. To break it she needs to perform well at USO relative to other contenders (but does not necessarily have to win it).

Yeah, Serena must've p1$$3d herself watching that. Kerber was awful. Pliskova played really well too though and very well deserved.

All Serena has to do is win 3 matches, that would get her to the 2nd week and break the tie with Steffi, correct

Maybe Serena is saying Front can pause from his "escalating activities " to acknowledge her while she breaks the record.

Will Serena send Karolina a "gift-basket" for helping her out? :puzzled   :dodgy: :p

Nah..Piskova is just doing her job and now has to be considered a real threat for the title in NY

If you've followed me or/and my blogs, sometimes I truly believe it's something I'd consider if in the same position! At the top of the list is Robin Soderling who deserves all kinds of appreciate by Roger! After Rafa was taken out, it gave Roger a clear path to his lone FO title taking his GOAT status out of immediate jeopardy! He's already got an anchor around his neck with his H2H record against 2 other ATG's! I suggested with all his millions, Federer should at least buy the man a house back in his native Sweden! :dodgy: :snicker :p

You've gone over this nonsense so many times now :nono We could say that about so many titles won over the years so cut it out. Soderling that year was the 2nd best player in the tournament and Roger needs to thank no one but himself for winning it as he had some extremely tough matches that tournament. The "anchor around his neck" nonsense I see you're applying to Djokovic as well as Nadal. Good one since he only got ahead in the h2h when Roger turned 34 lol. Sad. That shows how truly great Federer is to stay ahead of a guy in his absolute peak till he himself hit 34 so calm down on the nonsense ranting and especially ATP talk in the WTA forum :cover

Defenders don't do well at Cincy. Not surprised Kerber lost to a big hitter. Very happy for Serena. It would be great if she could end the year at number one, but that depends on her shoulder. I assume Kerber will surpass her. When is the big question.

NO.

This Monday (22nd), it will be 184th week for Serena. I assume that neither Serena nor Kerber is playing next week. Then, Monday, the 29th will be 185th week for Serena. They do not update the rankings in the middle of Grandslam based on points from a tournament that is not finished. So, Serena will be ranked #1 on Monday, the 5th September also independent of what happens at US open and that will be her 186th week thus matching Steffi's record.

However, to break Steffi's record Serena needs to be ranked #1 in the rankings that are published on 12th September, the day after US Open ends. Of course, Serena will be ranked #1 if she wins USO.
However, she does not need to win USO. She needs to outperform Kerber by 460 points at the US Open to do so. Serena, currently leads by 190 points. However, Serena is defending SF points of 780
at US Open whereas Kerber is defending 3rd round points of 130. So, with last year's USO points removed, Kerber is leading Serena by 460 (780-130-190) points. So, Serena needs to perform at least one round better than Kerber (if Kerber reaches SF). If Kerbie does not reach SF, doing just one round better would not do (as she needs to outperform by 460 points).

If Kerbie does not get #1 when USO ends, chances are she will not get #1 ranking anytime this year. This is because last year, Serena shut it off after US open (due to "heart injury") and so has no points to defend after USO.

Even if Kerbie gets #1 after USO, it will be shortlived and Serena has a greater chance of ending up as YE #1 due to reason described above. In the race Serena has a larger cushion than in the rankings.

Kerber had a great year so far even if she doesnt get to no.1 she has a lot to be proud about..winning a grand slam ,reaching Wimbledon final, winning a silver medal and she is almost no.1...she did well...
whereas the banshees are sidelined one for doping and the other is about to be a single mom..

There is a fundamental difference between the two situations.

Serena should send Pliskova a gift-basket as Serena was basically at her mercy, so to speak. If Pliskova lost, there is nothing that Serena could do to keep her ranking and the record. Also, this being a record at consecutive weeks, she surely would not get another chance at it at her age.

On the other hand, if Soderling did not defeat Rafa, it is still quite conceivable that Roger could have defeated Rafa THAT YEAR not withstanding his general dismal performance against Rafa at RG.
After all, the very fact that Rafa lost to Soderling shows that he was a weakling that year at RG due to either injury issues or emotional issues (with parents getting divorced). Moreover, it is not a case of Soderling taking out Rafa in one round and falling to world not #1001 in the next round. By reaching the finals, Soderling proved that he is a legit contender that year and Roger beat him. That beating is good enough in lieu of gift-basket. :laydownlaughing
