It's not uncommon that people find the players to be thinner in real life than they look on TV. He got thinner when he went gluten-free, but I doubt he's thinner than that. He looks the same to me, in terms of body. The questions about his fitness are other.

hopefull NOLE is OK and just that it's more about something we too can easily overlook -- whichhe HAS mentioned -- sometimes there are just times in the year when they are not at their most ''vigorous" - especially considering how LONG HIS dominance has been now.

i mean -- let us look back at all the great players -- there are VERY FEW who have had such a PROLONGED continuous success at being number one -- which means REACHING practically the great majority of finals or semis - THAT'S effort that can be so draining and harmful to their health and we can barely imagine what it takes - getup day in day out -- my god.

tha'ts their JOB and it's an extremely physical labor.

that's one thing. the other thing is - MOXIE is correct - these tennis players -- especiallynowadays with all the ''ripped" regimen? my goodness - they are quite' thin' by most ''average body" standards. and so what we normally see makes them look evne thinner in person.

even half serious college players -- just look at them - they're pretty ''thin'.

the only players we are talking about i've ever seen in person and close enough - either during matches or in ordinary clothes:

steffi graf, lindsay davenport, martina hingis, monica seles, patty schnyder in action in WTA PILOT PEN year end ..ALL were thinner than they looked on TV. i'd say more like ''very slender" .

in person but wearing a t-shirt signing autographs and letting himself take pictures with fans -- in MACY'S before a USO ...promo

PETE SAMPRAS...i was surprised at how ''lanky" he was..wiry is more the word perhaps, certainly athletic in a muscular way - but you could never think he was ''thick" or anything more than 'thin'.
although by today's standard that would probably still be more 'average' compared to today's more extremely ''ripped" ones like nole.

whatever ''frame-to -fat to weight to muscle to water" balance they have to maintain - it also depends on their particular frame such as neck size/length which can either emphasize the 'thin look' more on certain people than others.

with pete - i notcied that he had a THICK neck - nole for instance, does not..so at 6'3 to pete's 6-1` nole would indeed look much thinner with his frame if they were even around the same weight give or take 5 pounds for example..

pete also had THICKf- forearms - especially his rightplaying arm..wide muscles shoulders with full deltoids..but apart from that he was ''ordinary'' looking even, you'd never know he was then the greatest player on earth...

which to nole might we what is necessary for hm to perform the way he has so consistently - inclduing all the stretching and the speed and repetitive ball striking that is more characteristic of the game-style nowaydays.

there are just many factors , i think.

but MOXIE is right about them - they are usually probably thinner than we remember on TV.

no more so-called "super Saturday" though..

.men's sf are Friday, final sunday. so women get Saturday to themselves.

for the men - maybe that is better -- more even in their rest period.

and the women really did deserve to be JUST women - no matter the ''attendance"or tv dictates.
why should women finals be just treated as 'sandwich"? they are their own tour and event, u know.

As an overall assessment, Djokovic is still in the mystery column. Janowicz is a challenging first round, but shouldn't have been this much. Where is Novak's head and his body? Still TBD. And as far as Janowicz ever being an interesting player? This was a moment he could have seized. So, that is the measure of him.
that;s very true about JJ -- this was a match whereNOLE was probably as vulnerable as number one as he has shown elsewhere.

and JJ definitely failed to capitalize-- and whatever NOLE had left TODAY was just enough to keep through - as true, great champions do.

NOLE had to win at less than his best - and that alone was amazing...

but JJ has to do a lot of talking with himself from now on -- as to why he is back in challengers....for all his immense abilities.

What are you talking about? why mean? I don't wish anything bad to anyone, on the contrary I love to see everybody healthy and injuries free because it's the only way they can play better more competitive and better game
I haven't said that Novak is il, I SAID he looks thinner which doesn't mean he can be sick, maybe he needed to lose some weight like others players have done, mot was just an observation

i think carol does make a good point - it IS not easy to avoid remarking at nole's particular look because he is already very , very ripped even for tennis. and he does have a very wiry frame. the shoulders are wide, and he has a long body so when we look it can sometimes seem as if he's being 'too thin' or thinner than before.

and then we see or read that he's had some relatively - by his standards -- or we're accustomed to - ''poor' results - and it starts connecting to his health and how he looks to our eyes.

Given that Novak didn't look sturdy in this one, Vesely could be tough on paper, but, yes, his tough 5-setter today should take his legs out a bit, as a threat. It's still down to Novak and his fitness. He was not handed the easiest draw, just when he's feeling/looking a bit vulnerable. The question may not be of one opponent, but cumulative effect. Or, he'll do his more usual, and get stronger by rounds. This was a good match for him to get under his belt.

good points -- it's clear though that his draw -- if these typs get through to meet him - they've piled on quite a few really HARD hitters. this one coming up is another one.

Rafa was probably the first most famous "bulky" tennis player. And he was always remembered by those who reported on him as much taller and lankier than they saw him on TV, when they met him in person. They are distorted by video. I've never been interested in the conversation about how players look to us who watch them on TV. There are too many distorting factors involved.

i lways look at them closely because after all -- it's only by TV we can even see their game.s

but of coruse we now know that TV supposedly makes people look ''fuller" or something -- or whatever it is a person is like - it exaggerates it somewhat. if thin - thinner, if fat, even fatter, if looking muscular, even more so. .etc...

but in real life really different.

rafa just shows that a lot of it is also their exact INDIVIDUAL UNIQUE body make-up, rafa just has that DEEP upper body cavity not WIDE but DEEP from front to back in his chest cavity so - it adds to that ''bulk" look at how his shoulder blades are -- they push OUT behind him - so it emphasizes his ''bulk'' but in no way means he is actually HEAVILY weighted with muscles - in fact - when he takes of fhis shirt -- he's -- THIN!! in his pectoral muscles. so - like you said -- it's deceptive - the looks.

i never udnerstand myself how that ''bulky nadal" came up - because i never thought of him that way - but i always thought he IS a 'big guy' in teh sense that he has muscles of a sort wrapped around his frame - but not as if he were so heavy or anything like that.

Novak had problems, but I do not think Vesely will be big problem for him.

Vesely won just very closely over Myneni in 5 sets (7-6 4-6 2-6 6-2 7-5) and Mynemi is not top100 player (I did not hear about him till yesterday), and I watched few games of it and Vesely did not look absolutely healthy too.

I do not want to say that Novak will beat Vesely with his left hand, but at his current state and current state of Vesely, Djokovic should win. And I think he will win in 3 sets.

i;m sure you know better because you've observed their matches and conditions and compared .

hopefully for nole's sake he's going to play better now. vesely is that big tall guy also, if i remember correctly. so i was guessing that maybe it will be another ''big game" player against nole. but your observation that he too had a difficult time against a far less advanced player..that surely has to be a good indication. THANKS!

WHAT about NADAL? did you catch his performance and what do you think his level is like now?

we will also find out today how ANDY does -

I missed the match. Did anyone catch whether Nadal is still using his weird wide position when serving on the ad court?

Novak looked like he didn't want to be out there. I know that phrase gets said sometimes but he REALLY looked like he didn't want to be there. That might have been a bigger issue last night than his fitness.

I'm not sure I would say that. I would say that about his match against Querrey at Wimbledon. He only looked his best in fits and starts last night. It was hard to see what was bothering him or not working for him. Surely Janowicz proved once and for all that he's a non-entity by not taking advantage of a distracted and wounded Novak better than he did.

I saw last five games of Nadal third set and he was pretty dominant .. but taking into account that Istomin at that moment did not have much hope for a win, I would not make any serious conclusion from what I saw ..

But if your questions aims at his health .. Rafa looked fine a relaxed ;-)
