I think he was thinking about skipping it till the last moment but he saw the top guys withdrawing and thought it was his chance to finally win in Montreal. I think it was a bad move. I have never seen Roger be anything but an ultimate pro. THAT was a rookie move.

Exactly. I'm guess Moxie either needs a hearing aid or new speakers. After Federer said that McEnroe then said that Roger is forever optimistic - the interviewer mentioned his bad back...Fed says yeah, but it's great to be back here playing. The interviewer mentions almost choking - Fed says, yeah, but it's a coin toss in the 5th and he's just happy to get through. The interview mentioned the noise - Fed says, yeah, but the crowds are great and thanks for the support. And he DID compliment Tiafoe at the end and said he had a bright future and many good things coming his way.

Of course it is complete speculation by me That why I started it by saying " I think.." Man, can you ever imagine Roger admitting to something like that? But it is plausible and explains the lack of practice. I really think he had every intention to skip Canada.

Roger nearly handed himself his own ass and if you had seen most of that match you'd agree. There's a lot of players on tour that would've beaten Roger tonight. Correction - Roger nearly handed himself his own ass, so yeah, it WAS on his racket. Surely you noticed that Federer HANDED Tiafoe a break in the very first game with 4 UEs - and 2 breaks in the 4th with more UEs. Tiafoe played well in patches, but as McEnroe said - Federer was playing with his C+ game and he wasn't moving well the first set, set and a half.. The 2 sets Roger played his B-Game - he toasted Tiafoe. Roger was just as inconsistent at Tiafoe, so you know he'll be working on that for his next match. But saying that it wasn't on his racket? Just downright contrary just to be contrary. If Federer had played the way he did in Miami - it would have been over in 3 sets and you know it.

I agree with Darth here: I saw the whole match and this a perfect assessment of how Tiafoe's game was. He did had patches of good play -- but high risk at the same time, hence the coin toss. Not the most generous thing for sure, but honest.

Here is where those of us who can't stand Roger for this exact thing divide from those of you fans, in a large way: You lot always say that the arrogant things, or ungenerous things that he says about opponents are, well, "honest." And there has been, over the years, a lot of those folks sneering at Nadal for "false modesty." Overall, I'd prefer a player to give credit to the opponent's effort, and not be so convinced that it's all on his racquet. If it's seems a bit falsely modest, I'd prefer it. Let the sportswriters heap the praise later.

He sucked aside from the 3rd set. Only was worried about this match if Fed wasn't right and he clearly isn't right. The third set gives some hope that maybe some of this performance was rust or getting used to conditions but I think there's more to it and it will probably keep him from going far.

The only thing this match gave me hope for is - Roger couldn't possibly play crappier unless his back is completely locked up. I have a feeling though that he'll play until he "can't walk for 6 months" and misses the Laver Cup if it means winning his 20th and putting more distance between himself and Nadal and Djokovic. A 5 Slam deficit for Nadal would be practically insurmountable given that Nadal can only win tournaments on clay these days and who knows what Djokovic is going to be like when he returns. I think Nole will win more Slams - but 8? Not gonna happen after age 30 - especially since it took him 12 years to win the first 12 and Sascha Zverev is hungry to win Slams and become #1..

Count me out of those who wants to get in the who-is-more-generous competition. All I am saying is that I agree with his assessment of the match, and hence of Tiafoe's play. I am not seeing how his words imply that the match was in his racquet (even if, seeing the number of UFE's, and the match itself, well, it was). It does not take the merit away from Tiafoe (it is a rookie against an all time great, after all). The brightest moment of the match was when he broke for 4-5. He deserved more after that, and as I said earlier, even as a Federer fan that final game upset me.

After that horrible 1st set, I figured Roger would get his act together! I had other things to watch! Just found out it went 5 and that 4th set must have looked really bad to his fans! I thought it might be a tough night match, but Roger seems to have barely escaped! He better step it up if he expect to get to that appointed SEMI against his nemesis/rival for #1, Nadal! ::sw1::

Clearly you missed the part where I said I missed most of the match due to work. I don't see where "if Federer had played the way he did in Miami," is even a thing. If his back weren't hurting, if he weren't 36, etc. Life intrudes.

Fine. The definition difference between a Fed fan and a Rafa fan. If it doesn't sound arrogant to your ear, you'll never understand why he irritates the other half of the tennis world.

I think I understand what you mean here. It is the same as the Roger half complaining about how Rafa takes more time than necessary on the tennis court. Many times the two sets of fans have been in each other's shoes, somehow.
