Justification to all Fed fans who were worried about this match. I only watched the end. What about Fed's performance?

Darth, the thing is, there is no guarantees either way. What if he skips Canada, plays Cincy and gets hurt there ? The problem , in my opinion anyways, was not the scheduling. It was the total rookie mistake of playing a tournament unprepared. You just cannot do that in any age, let alone at HIS age...

Yes I agree. He should've taken the two weeks prior to Cincy to prepare. But the fact is he should've never played both and therefore only play Cincy as it's a much better tournament for him.

He sucked aside from the 3rd set. Only was worried about this match if Fed wasn't right and he clearly isn't right. The third set gives some hope that maybe some of this performance was rust or getting used to conditions but I think there's more to it and it will probably keep him from going far.

Roger can be a dick: "Things connect for him in patches, and when they do, it's a coin toss." No mention of Tiafoe's skills. Nicely generous, Rog.

Anti-climax tend to the match. I felt bad for Tiafoe, who showed a lot of guts. The slice that Federer put on the net on the second match point (first break point at 15-40) was disgusting. I said to myself he deserved to lose after that point but he got a gift back.

Maybe he just needed a rude awakening. I hope 50+ unforced errors don't come buy every night.

Just asking...He went into Montreal without having practiced on hardcourts?
He said he had "next to no practice" except some gym action. I think he was thinking about skipping it till the last moment but he saw the top guys withdrawing and thought it was his chance to finally win in Montreal. I think it was a bad move. I have never seen Roger be anything but an ultimate pro. THAT was a rookie move.

Well he was being honest. Did you miss the part where he said Tiafoe has a bright future?

What a nerve-wrecking match? In the fifth set, Fed served excellent from the beginning and continuously, except when serving for the match.
Glad he could break back immediately. Especially with USO, the final set also being decided a TB, it could have been a literal coin toss.

I'm shocked he only hit 56 UE's. That seems generous, would've guessed closer to 70

When you become old, some days may be you don't feel it, as Chrissy often says. I can understand that. But, the patter Roger is showing is weird. Within the same match, he is like a totally different self in different parts of the match.

If he lets matches go to four and five sets in early rounds, finally when the big one comes he may not be ready. Remember that in 2014, he went for 5 sets against Monfils and could not focus in the next one.

I agree with Darth here: I saw the whole match and this a perfect assessment of how Tiafoe's game was. He did had patches of good play -- but high risk at the same time, hence the coin toss. Not the most generous thing for sure, but honest.

Dick or not...What is not true about that statement? It may have been a backhanded compliment, but what do you expect from a dick like Federer?

That is not what he said. He said the fifth set was a coin toss and he is glad that it went his way.

She won't waste an opportunity to complain about Fed's personality. She's used to the fake humble guy who always praises the opponents after he beats them.

Well, that's a very 2013-2015 thing, in fact. It was only in the first half of this year were he had no dips in form during a match (on the sets he lost in AO he played much better than in the ones he's been losing recently, apart maybe from the second in the final).

I think Roger is safe in the next round. In R3, Roger gets either Delicano or Verdasco. Either of them can be dangerous if Roger plays like today.

Whatever. Roger can be the king of the back-handed compliment. Tiafoe nearly handed him his ass, and Roger still acts like it's all on his racquet. He pats Frances on the head and sends him into his future. I'm sorry, but that's the way it sounds to me.

Note to Roger: If you're going to play that crappy? You should just go ahead and pullout and save yourself for defending your Aussie Open title next year. I'm just saying - that wasn't even his C+ game as McEnroe alluded to. That was more like D+ with a healthy dose of playing a kid with not enough game or experience. I've seen Roger choke some matches over the years but it's generally been against Nadal, and Djokovic. Then again - he had to have been having Donskoy and Haas flashbacks when he got broken in the 5th set trying to close it out. He admitted to protecting his back early on...but if he wants to get past Kyrgios he's going to have to put that aside. Kyrgios was probably watching that match and now thinks he can beat Federer if they both get to the 4th round - and who could blame him. Geez. I hope this start is more Aussie Open than Dubai\Stuttgart...
