I feel it's rather insulting to mention Davydenko in the same sentence as Medvedev. Even Kafelnikov seriously underrates the guy. He's so much better than that

I Was talking about the same ugly game and deadpan demeanor
Their games have nothing in common, imho. Davydenko, of small statue, won so much by taking the ball early, on the rise. Medvedev is a baseliner with a big serve for his 6'6", and a quirky craftiness. But, yes, they're both Russian.

Medvedev is the first Russian Grand Slam and US Open men's singles champion since Marat Safin who won the AO in 2005 ( I was there live for that match) and US Open in 2000.

Did anyone catch what Medvedev said at the last? L2 plus left?

And he did it, in straights! His best performance ever. Well, @Front242, your man finally comes good.
I did not see the final but will do so later. Do you reckon Djokovic's long road to the final was a factor?

Let's face it at his age and also the way he goes about his game, this is not aggression based. Congrats to Danill who avenges his thrashing at the australian open this year's final.

I’m thinking more how this inflates Medvedev going forward.
I think we all know this increases Medvedev’s profile. However, Djokovic craves anything that would set him apart from Roger and Rafa. A win and a Calendar Slam would have been his bread and butter, since he isn’t winning Miss Congeniality, and he hates that. I wonder if this may weigh on his mind for the next couple of slams.

I said I did. What do you want? Clearly that was a painful loss.
Your previous reply….ok I’ll move on. I guess it’s just disappointing to see some small brain cells here hoping for the highest greatness not to happen, just so they can ’protect’ the other big 3 members.

Great match by Medvedev. It got dicey there at the end, but he was playing so strongly. And Novak, a class act in defeat, as always. That footage of him crying into his towel at 5-4 was heart-breaking. On the other hand, he's doing just fine, and it was nice to see the NY crowd behind him - he even commented on that.

Anyhow, I'm glad with the performance of the Next Gen in this tournament. Someone finally broke through, unless we count old man Thiem last year. FAA has had two good Slams in a row, Zverev is playing great, Berretini right there, the emergence of Alcaraz, etc. A year or two it looked like Medvedev would be the first, it just took a bit longer than expected. Next year should be interesting.
