US Open announced the seeds list officially today. IMO, the following players are dangerous floaters (unseeded players who may cause an upset or two) are

1. DelPo
2. Verdasco
3. Muller
4. Borna
5. Fog
6. Dog
7. Dreddy

The projected quarterfinals look very similar to recent projected quarterfinals in other tourneys. The randomization did not seem to help at least this time.

Some fairly interesting early round matchups for American prospects:

R1 Sock-Fritz
R1 Isner-Tiafoe

R2 (projected) Johnson-Del Potro

I think Fritz might have a shot against Sock- probably overly hopeful on my part, but whatever. I don't think Big Foe is going to make much headway against Little John. Johnson is going to prove his words true- giving del Potro a WC means an American will go out early.

Wawrinka could face his best friend Kyrgios in R4. What with a Zverev match in R3 and a possible Thiem QF, Stanimal will go down as the "prospect killer" if he rolls.

I think Del Potro is gonna absolute MURDER Johnson.. Maybe its me but if Fed played Johnson.. would Johnson win more than 7 or less games? Heck no.. Roger would dissect his game so fast and turn the match into a glorified practice session.. Again maybe its me but I do not see how anyone struggles against this guy's limited game.

Yeah, I don't get Johnson either. My breakdown of his skills:

Serve: Being generous, average
Forehand: Slightly better than average
Backhand: Slightly worse than average
Movement: Not good
Mental strength: Inconsistent

I really don't know how he keeps winning. Maybe he just manages to convince his opponents that he is as entitled to win as he thinks he is due to all of the NCAA success.

A NCAA championship and a dollar will buy you a cup of coffee (although these days it depends on where you go for coffee).

From the old days, his game is quite competent, but no real weapon! He has to be "in the zone" presently, playing well against players underwhelming to say the least for him to actually do damage to a draw! It'll pass and he'll drop like a stone in the ranking soon enough; mark my words! :nono  :dodgy: :cover

I looked up Johnson stats: the first part of the year he was consistent with ranking at the time.. loosing early by the 2nd or 3rd of 250 level tournaments(DYjr has beat him easily 2 or 3 times for what its worth).. the 2nd half he has had some decent wins over Isner who is no where near 100 % and he took a set off Murray at Rio when Andy's mind went walk about. I would be comfortable with Isner or Quarry being the number one rank American player but not Johnson all due respect.

Looking mighty tough for Nadal--Raonic, Nole and Murray would have to be overcome. Tough

Same... Querrey, Sock, Isner, Fritz, hell even Tiafoe I'd be fine with as the top American. Johnson just rubs me the wrong way.

Most unpredictable first rounder is Nando-Stan I think. Anything is possible there .

It's will come down to Nando's prior night date with whatever hot chick he has or Stan's latest teenager conquest..:nono

This is a real toss up although Stan should be favorite but who knows which player will show up

Safin could handle his "business":clap off the court and still win a grand Slam title. (Ref. AO 2005):clap

I like JMDP's draw and glad draw gods had some mercy on him.

To begin with, he did not fall in the quarter headed by other members of Big Four - Minus One.
Nole, Rafa and Andy are all in different quarters. So, it is quite conceivable that JMDP could end up being the winner of his quarter, at least.

He opens against Diego-Shortman and JMDP being a tallman should have no problem against him. Next up is Steven Johnson, a winnable match. In the third round he has to play one of the head cases of Dog or Fog or a rapidly declining Ferru. Either way, it looks like he can make it to R16. His projected opponent in R16 is Thiem who has already played 200 matches this year and so will be a complete contrast in freshness as Delpo has barely played 20 matches. I really doubt that Stan will be waiting for him across the net considering his inconsistencies and so QF opponent might be an easy one for JMDP.

Go Delpo! :plot

p.s. Also, unlike in Olympics, he will be getting a day's rest after each match and so should be able to keep fighting as long as he can keep his early matches short and win in straight sets.

Yep, the best of five set stamina may be his biggest obstacle in that easy quarter he is in.

I assume that the general consensus is that Novak is more vulnerable to get upset somewhere along the way (than Andy) and that if both indeed manage to reach the final, then Novak will win. I too subscribe to this theory.
