I think Serena is sending a strong message to the rest of the WTA today in her win.
Fran was just a spectator on court.....I did feel sad for Fran in the end.

I don't like Sloane's game at all. She does not seem to have a weapon of choice
and also she does not seem to have much of a plan. Even when she wins, it almost
always feels as though she won becuase one of the two has to win.

I would rather prefer Alison Riske's aggressive game. She almost took out Aga in
Wimby and played very nicely.

She does not seem to have a weapon of choice and also she does not seem to have much of a plan.
Very excellent points GSAM.. GSAM.. your signature is accurate, Sloane didn't just win, Minella just lost it. To be honest the poor Russian player simply choked more than Sloane won the match. It will catch up with Sloane against Ursula if Sloane doesn't improve on her footwork and lack of a plan to be executed. Her coach should be blasting Sloane and have her ass back on the practice court immediately or she will be watching the Open as a spectator or a television viewer like the rest of us.

Sloane won in spite of her tennis play. If Minella (from Luxenbourg, not Russia) played just a little better, Sloane would have been gone in the first round. She played poorly and showed her lack of form (not moving her feet etc.).

This is my interpretation as well. Sloan got very lucky in the tiebreak. It was more a matter of Minella losing the match, vs. Sloane winning it. Minella knew it, too, hence the tears after match point. She knew she wasn't beaten, so much as she blew it.

Yes, that's just way too much power for anyone to deal with when Serena is dialed in like that. Fran did all she could and still came up short.

Sloane is going to bring her level of play up and stop all of these three setters and narrow escapes if she wants to reach any tournament final. She has a lot to learn about her opponent's court position and play the correct shots if she ever wants to get better.

Venus' dress was pretty and she looked beautiful. Her skirt outfit is nice too. If you don't like it, you don't have to wear it. Simple as that!!

But more importantly, she played AWESOME!!

Keep it going, Venus

Bodo on Day one

The storied names in action all took care of their designated business, as personified by the Williams sisters. Oddly enough, unseeded WTA No. 60 Venus scored one of the significant upsets of the day, knocking off No. 12 seed Kirsten Flipkens, 6-1, 6-2. But let’s keep it real here. Her name is Williams. It’s only an upset when she loses.

Second on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Venus set the tone for the day, and her kid sister Serena ended it emphatically with a formidable display of firepower in the evening match. She crushed Francesca Schiavone, 6-0. 6-1.
