Wild day for the third quarter. I didn't see Thiem AND Tsitsipas losing today. But I knew it was possible for both. Rublev is high on confidence right now from his win over Fed in Cincy and Tsitsipas has zero reason to have much confidence after his last few months. Same with Thiem. And we know Fabbiano believes in himself and will fight for it from his upset of Tsitsipas and others at Wimbledon.
I knew Kukushkin had been playing well of late, but I really figured RBA would deal with him in 3 or 4 sets fairly simply. Good for Kukushkin. Taking advantage of an opportunity. He's been at it a while. Maybe the next over 30 man to try to turn his career around.
Edmund's fall isn't terribly surprising, though, I did think he'd have the goods for today. Andujar not always at his best anymore. But I guess he had it today. Rolling back the years.
FAA playing better now. But if Shapovalov can finish him off, it'll be another seed down. Though. Shapovalov is the more experienced player and had a nice run here the last two years. And FAA coming off the injury hasn't played much. Shapovalov has struggled all year so I wasn't sure how he'd fair. But looks like it's FAA that wasn't ready today. And Shapovalov has been lights out. As young as FAA is, it was never going to be surprising for him to lose this one, even with his seed. Mostly because I'm sure he and Shapo have played quite a bit, both being from Canada. Shapovalov has just fallen out of the seeds. But we know he's a top 30 player and a future top 10 player.
Pospisil has just finished of Khachanov. I did not see that coming. Pospisil certainly has game. And Khachanov has shown plenty of vulnerability. But I just figured Pospisil wasn't up to the task yet. He only came back from the injury at Wimbledon. Lost to FAA first round there and has only played a few matches since then. Good for him to dig it out today. Khachanov will need to figure out where his disconnect is. Because he just keeps faltering despite playing well in the matches he loses. But good on Pospisil to hang in there and dig out those two 7-5 sets to go up 2 sets to 1.
Was surprised to see Chung lose the first set. But he dug it out in 5 sets. Very happy for him. So glad to have him back. Ridiculously talented.
