They've been showing Gauff, which I was all into. I looked at the scores and Rafa is already 4-1 up on Millman and I have yet to see a ball struck.

Wild day for the third quarter. I didn't see Thiem AND Tsitsipas losing today. But I knew it was possible for both. Rublev is high on confidence right now from his win over Fed in Cincy and Tsitsipas has zero reason to have much confidence after his last few months. Same with Thiem. And we know Fabbiano believes in himself and will fight for it from his upset of Tsitsipas and others at Wimbledon.

I knew Kukushkin had been playing well of late, but I really figured RBA would deal with him in 3 or 4 sets fairly simply. Good for Kukushkin. Taking advantage of an opportunity. He's been at it a while. Maybe the next over 30 man to try to turn his career around.
Edmund's fall isn't terribly surprising, though, I did think he'd have the goods for today. Andujar not always at his best anymore. But I guess he had it today. Rolling back the years.

FAA playing better now. But if Shapovalov can finish him off, it'll be another seed down. Though. Shapovalov is the more experienced player and had a nice run here the last two years. And FAA coming off the injury hasn't played much. Shapovalov has struggled all year so I wasn't sure how he'd fair. But looks like it's FAA that wasn't ready today. And Shapovalov has been lights out. As young as FAA is, it was never going to be surprising for him to lose this one, even with his seed. Mostly because I'm sure he and Shapo have played quite a bit, both being from Canada. Shapovalov has just fallen out of the seeds. But we know he's a top 30 player and a future top 10 player.

Pospisil has just finished of Khachanov. I did not see that coming. Pospisil certainly has game. And Khachanov has shown plenty of vulnerability. But I just figured Pospisil wasn't up to the task yet. He only came back from the injury at Wimbledon. Lost to FAA first round there and has only played a few matches since then. Good for him to dig it out today. Khachanov will need to figure out where his disconnect is. Because he just keeps faltering despite playing well in the matches he loses. But good on Pospisil to hang in there and dig out those two 7-5 sets to go up 2 sets to 1.

Was surprised to see Chung lose the first set. But he dug it out in 5 sets. Very happy for him. So glad to have him back. Ridiculously talented.

Is it too late for Next Gen to take up a different sport? Djoker and Nadal will get total free reign for at least 5-6 more years until another generation comes up.

Let's hope not! I've there right w/ you though! It's just ridiculous the same top players just "own it" with little chance of a change! :nono:

Chair gave Nadal a time violation warning when he was holding for crowd noise and movement. Even Millman tried to back him up. (Fair play from him.) Commies think it was the wrong call, too. They say that Ashe is even louder now, with the roof.

There's a constant buzz or hum you can hear even during play

Rublev's upset opens up an opportunity for Simon. But Rublev would love to make the most of the opportunity himself of course. Pulling for Rublev in that one. Just glad to have him back. And clearly right at the top of his game. If I think about it though. Seeing as he's been struggling and lost today, if Tsitsipas had won, Simon probably still would have had a good chance against him.

With RBA out, Berrettini will hope to take advantage of that opening. He put Gasquet to bed easily enough. Which I did not see happening so easily. But good for him. Highest seed left in the quarter now. Other than FAA who is in a battle for his life right now. Shapo has just broken in the third and will serve for the match.

Just wild how quickly this quarter fell apart.

Assuming Nadal takes care of business, looks like he's got an even cleaner path to the final now. Which is what he was looking for at Wimbledon. Hence the whining about Roger getting the number 2 seed.

FAA out. Of the two most difficult matches to call today, Tsitsi Fly v. Rubbles, FAA v. Shapo, I called both wrong.

I feel a great deal of local shame for the way this roof was engineered and what it has done to the players who play on it. It's now hotter (for players and fans) and noisier.

I came home at 3-3 in the third. Did not see the most of it, but it looks like Denis dominated in this match.

Does anyone else think that Millman looks like a blonde/blue-eyed Alan Cumming? I do think he's a dish.

The roof did bring shade to people like me who sit in the nosebleeds...But you're right, it's noisier and the humidity is off the charts

OK, I don't agree with folks who think that Nadal is a moonballer...but those were some moon balls to (try to) stay in the point.

I've sat in there across the years, though not in the nosebleeds since the roof went on. In the mid-pack area, you still have the sun, but the breeze is gone. Today is a bit more humid than yesterday, but pleasant temperature in the city, and yet Nadal was sweating like a meatloaf at the start. Seems a little less drippy now.
