No doubts about that the worst and more dificult opponent for any single player is an injury, period.

19-year old Alexander Bublik just beat Lucas Pouille. Both disappointing for Pouille, who might have a rough year, and exciting for Bublik, who could be promising.

Pouille was still injured, he should have W/O instead of doing this mess

I expected someone to withdraw in time for Roger to be elevated by 1 seed to #16, but obviously intelligence and common sense didn't come into play! Why go into a major anything but 100 % playing against the best in the world? Back in the day, even Sampras was vulnerable to absolute nobodies; majors or Masters! He's been upset by a player only a few of us can still remember! Pouille was hopefully the future of the game, making a name for himself upsetting Nadal at the USO last season in 5 sets! Theim is also overplaying IMO! He hasn't been offered an exhibition turned down yet! :nono

Fiero, when did ANYONE say Pouille was "the future of the game?"

Also, one injury-driven 1R loss at the AO doesn't completely write him off.

I still think a reasonable expectation is as a Gilles Simon/Nicolas Almagro type, what I call a third tier player. Nothing wrong with that.

We had three upsets of seeded players on Day 1.

1. Pouille taken out by Bublik
2. Pablo Cuevas taken out by Diego Short Man
3. Ramon-Vinolas (the guy who beat Fed in Shanghai) taken out by Lucas Lacko.

Who do you have on the radar for Day 2?
You got 1.5 hours to post.

Totally silly to write-off Pouille after one loss.

Who wrote him off? Drama queens need to take a chill pill! I was disappointed he pushed himself to play when not ready for this tourney! Get over yourselves people! :nono :cover

I have only one upset on my radar today. Fog to take out Deliciano.

Lopez is having some injury issues due to which he retired from a warm-up tourney recently.
So, if Fog can keep his head together he got a shot.

Tiafoe serve is too inconsistent..his game is also predictable ..he needs a coach..otherwise he may not be as successful as dyjr or jack Sock, imo

I have the same impression. A lot of marketing, not too much substance.
His results are very inconsistent on the challenger tour.

No I don't .donald has been the most overrated US teen player ever..at most all he could hope for is to have a late career surge like Marty Fish ..however you are being coy :snicker

herios, unless something changes with Tiafoe, he will always struggle with at the challenger level ..all he has now is a forehand , his serve has no arch or movement, whom ever Architected this mess needs their ass kicked

I could see Tiafoe doing a Borna Coric: jumping into the middle of the top 100, but stagnating for a year or two...and who knows if Borna will ever develop further.

Of the young Americans, Taylor Fritz has the highest upside. Tiafoe has problems, Kozlov looks like a David Goffin to me - which is solid, just not top 10. Donaldson has stalled for years now. Opelka, Rubin, Noah, Paul, Escobedo...not sure, although all will be top 100, but probably not top 10. Opelka might be the next Isner.

Still, American men's tennis looks better than it has in 15 years, as I wrote about.

From what I seen in regards to American tennis, my thoughts are not so confident because of the prior connors/McEnroe and Sampras/Agassi eras which were absolutely brilliant. The Roddick/Blake/Fish were good and the present Isner offer some highs & promises but yet little rewards. Will any of today's players have as much success as Isner did, I just don't really know. Sock as I mentioned offers some promises but the (Fritz, Tiafoes and others) I agree with El dude and herios, probably not top ten.

For round 2 - I will throw the following as my 3 'biggest upset potentials

Steve Johnson to take out STM
Dan Evans takes care of Cilic
Donald Young edges Kohlschrieber

Honourable mention for Nishikori and Chardy, but I think Nishikori will prevail in 4
