As noted in El Dude's thread about the 2005 Aussie Open, the vice grip has been released.

The band has broken up due to "creative differences"...now for the solo albums!

With two slam winners, two masters winners outside of the big four, it has definitely outworn it's utility.

Interestingly, after the initial shock..I have a strange sense of acceptance.

Yes, very definitely it is now time to officially retire the phrase "Big Four".

As expected, now that the "big four" is dismantled, there is a frenzy out (there like
the looting going on in shops after LA riots). There are more than 10 different players
who want a share of the loot now with not too much difference between them.

Also, this year we are guaranteed to have ANTI CALENDAR GRAND SLAM. i.e., all four grand slams
being won by different players.

The last time it happened was 2012, but in that year, the big four won one each.

You have to go way back to 2003 to find the previous occurrence of it.

I think for the next four years or so we will continue to have anti grand slam occurrences.

Very good point.

Sad day really but tennis needed this . A good thing new players are reaching the final. I hope Dimitrov also now joins the slam finalists club to make tennis more interesting.

I just don't want ATP to follow the WTA route when serena wasn't playing though with news players winning slams left right those days

I think it's refreshing to see new players in the final.

It's strange, but interesting.

I just don't want Rafa to have a easy path next year though. Djokovic has been pretty inconsistent this year and his mind isn't on tennis right now

Rafa won't have easy path. First of all Novak will be back with body and mind in 2015. Also,
there are too many big hitters who can blow rafa away these days, at least in quick courts
such as Wimby and USO.
