What's your point exactly? We all know Nadal is better than everyone on clay. He's not better on other surfaces so, again, what's your point?

My point is that Nadal has beaten Federer on any surface besides on clay, am I right?

And Federer has beaten Nadal on every surface also, so?

I know, and he was right, that's what I'm saying. He was honest in his assessment...

Sorry but I don't think he was right, he would have showed that he was able to beat him on any surface (several times)and then to say that later

Er...he has :cover It's true he can beat him on any surface and not anything close to what GSM mentioned Nadal said years ago (note difference between I know I can beat him and there is no chance he can beat me. Which guy sounds more like a pretentious tosser to you?!) before uncle phony started to clean up Rafa's act to the stuff we hear these days which he's been conditioned to say like a robot and which isn't his own personality but force fed politically correct garbage.

Has anyone provided links to any of these supposed quotes? I don't recall seeing them.

This is turning into nothing but "he said, he said", which is always dangerous, because memories are far from perfect -- not to mention someone could simply make something up, and state, "Oh, well, he said in an interview five years ago he could beat him at that tournament."

Given how testy people are getting, I suggest backing up these claims with actual quotes. The internet is vast, and these are the most famous tennis players in the world. Find the quotes.

Carol you're getting too silly for this thread, seriously. Is this your idea of "The ultimate FEDAL thread" spamming all this stupid crap?

"Thanks" but I think that someone else started to say what Nadal said so why I can't say what Federer has said too? give me the reason to call me silly

If you actually read some of those quotes from Federer you'd see most were absolutely 100% fine.

Yes she is. Pointless drivel about nothing.

Are you? didn't you read what I say some posts before about if we would start to say what each player say we wouldn't finish never and ever????.

I haven't said those quotes are bad, that link is the proof about what he said about Nadal, that's all

I am talking about RG and not Wimby. I agree that I am guilty of not providing an appropriate link to support my claim. I will try to dig in when I get some free time this summer to actually find a link to prove that I am not making things up here to tarnish Rafa.

Having said that as I already mentioned, I do not have a problem with a player A saying before the match that they will beat player B (independent of whether they actually beat them in the
said match or not). In fact, I would like them to do so. If it goes to low level thrash talking it may
be in bad taste. But, just a general expression of your genuine opinion is not something to be chastised, IMHO. Rafa certainly did not trash talk Roger even in 2006. But, I do believe that he
expressed his genuine opinion that Roger cannot beat him at RG before RG tourney started
(and as all of we know he walked the walk as well) and I don't have a problem with that either.
The only reason I am mentioning is that he "learnt/got coached" to be extremely humble
when talking about Roger in press conferences since then.

Nadal didn't quite say "there's no way Roger beats me at RG" but it's true, he did bring up the wins at Dubai, Monte Carlo and Rome. I can't find the quote either but I vividly remember. I think it was in response to Roger saying he feels he's closer to beating him after their Rome match (in which Roger had match-points), and Roger said Rafa is a bit one-dimensional and that he has "the weapons to dismantle him."

Nadal's response was to bring up his wins over Roger that year, basically saying that if Roger could beat him, why didn't he when they played in Dubai, MC or Rome.

Which is why I try not to pay attention to this kind of banter! Roger has no choice but to fain confidence in himself to win; why else continue? Then Rafa's just being honest which no one really wants to hear! You can't win either way it seems; esp. the self-deprecation! :nono  :dodgy:

When you put it in that context, it does sound right, and more like Rafa. (A man has a right to defend himself.) And I'm inclined to trust your memory, given how you dug up that old Cali thread, remembering that he seemed to have a different attitude towards Novak's performance in the RG final last year to this.

The discussion of competition across eras on the other thread was a bit of a distraction, but we might continue it here, if anyone wants, and to that point: Here's an interesting analysis
