kinda funny: we always managed to turn almost every single thread into a fedal one - and now we've turned the designated fedal thread into a thread about the history of the Big Four ;)

The "Big Four" was top 4 in the rankings for a long time, so maybe by the middle of 2009 when it was clear Murray was a lot better than the rest there were some already calling it a Big Four. Look at it like this; from 2008-2010 you still had someone else winning a GS (DP) others reaching the occasional GS final (Tsonga, Roddick, Sod 2X, Berd), winning some MS events (Davydenko, Ljubicic, Roddick, Tsonga) and a YEC (Davydenko).

Come 2011-2013 which was the period of time where the Big Four ruled all and suddenly the only other player to make a GS final was Ferrer and we all know the circumstances around that one. I think Ferrer was just about the only other player to even win an MS event those 3 years as well.

So I just think the narrative is clearly different from 2008 - 2010 when Nole and Murray were way behind Fedal yet were still clearly the 3rd and 4th best players compared to 2011-2013 when it was practically a 4 man tour. That is when the term Big Four was a consensus whereas 2008-2010 you probably just had some people here and there mentioning it. I do vaguely remember that talk after DP winning the USO that there is a Big Four + 1. I probably wouldn't have mentioned it at the time but the thought that there was a Big Four as early as 2009 was stupid as it would be based on Murray winning a few MS titles and getting his ass kicked in the only GS final he had made up to that point.

I think the phrase came from the fact that these were the guys that were expected to be in semis. It wasn't about anyone of the 4 could win the title. It was about who we were likely to see at the weekend

So, does that mean Ronaldo beats Messi every time they play?

Messi was injured for awhile and when he came back he was playing awful for one year, now he plays better than ever, he reminds me more to Nadal if this one would start to play well ;)

Jealous? Behave....

the AntiPusher said:
Broken , I haven't seen a Rafa fan say that Rafa shouldn't be penalized if he exceeds the limit. Most of them are pretty honest. Heck, I even said that Rafa is quilty of exceeding the time limits. However, this board especially the jealous fans of his success look for every bit of bullcrap to try to make him look like he is the "Tom Brady or Bill B " of tennis. We will see how the next few months pan out to see if Rafa gets closer to their "Beloved or the one they currently "love".

In the spirit of pointless threads... :laydownlaughing

Why on earth would a Fed fan be jealous of Rafa? Behave yourselves :snicker

RE: Jealous? Behave....

Actually neither thread is pointless. If Nadal's legacy should be questioned due to coaching as you suggest, then if that doesn't deserve its own thread, I don't know what does. Unless you're implying your own comment was pointless, then I'd agree.

I wonder how did Nadal manage to win Indian Wells 3 times, Canada 3 times, and Cinci without Toni being present. In the eternal words of a wise man, he either can do it on his own or he can't.

As far as Fed fans being jealous, I don't understand why they would be when their guy has won so much. But I don't think this thread is pointless. After all, it's worth discussing why an intelligent person would make a statement as baffling as a 14 time major winner's legacy being tarnished by his coach allegedly yelling instructions (which of course, no other player does, ever). Jealousy? I don't think so. But it's either bias or silliness, and I'll go with the former.

You know, Murat, your idea of a standard Fedal thread was just brilliant. If only there could be sub-threads within a thread...

Who has the dirtiest hand after a match, Federer or Nadal?

For me, this is one of the most important tennis questions, and deserves an own thread. It is even more important than "Who is the holyer: Federer or Nadal", as it deals with day to day life. And of course is so important than it cannot be constrained to the Fedal thread. Murat only created that because he wants avoid the real interesting discussions.

I am preparing an statistical analysis of how many times each one of them touches the given body part during the match, separating by several categories: one finger touch, two finger touch, etc... light touch, heavy touch, squeez, and so on. I will also include interviews with proeminent biologists and some material about bacterial transfer on open environments, together with comparative studies about micro-organisms living on noses and other human cavities not to be named in a polite forum like this.

I am sorry Djokovic fans, but he does not belong in this conversation. Maybe Murray...

I think we need an official poll for this one :laydownlaughing

Maybe anonymous, given the gravity of the question.

It would also be great if Broken can write a page long write up about why Rafa's dirt is actually a sign of cleanliness :laydownlaughing

Depends on who he's playing against. If it's against Roger, then all the slapping around he does to him eventually cleans the dirt right off.

I'll also report this thread for being a clear attempt at a distraction.
