The top 3 have qualified (though the WTA haven't announced anyone except for Serena so far). The race the WTA website put up is misleading, it counts best 16 results when you can't possibly count 16 results up to this stage as there are 2 mandatory events in US Open and Beijing to come.

Hey Ozza, help me out. Make this interesting.
Folks need to realize that from here on every point counts!
There aren't many to score either. We have US Open, a couple of back to back premier events and that's it!
Moscow almost never counts when it comes to year end race.
This week we have a 470 pointer on line in New Haven and there are a bunch of Ladies

The race really tightens up when you look at the #5 down to #20

[5] 5 Errani, Sara Italy 4130
[6] 6 Li, Na China 4090
[7] 7 Bartoli, Marion France 3174
[8] 8 Kvitova, Petra Czech Republic 2960
[11] 9 Jankovic, Jelena Serbia 2876
[9] 10 Vinci, Roberta Italy 2720
[10] 11 Stephens, Sloane United States 2648
[12] 12 Lisicki, Sabine Germany 2472
[14] 13 Kerber, Angelique Germany 2417
[13] 14 Flipkens, Kirsten Belgium 2378
[15] 15 Kirilenko, Maria Russia 2311
[16] 16 Wozniacki, Caroline Denmark 2299
[20] 17 Stosur, Samantha Australia 2087
[17] 18 Cirstea, Sorana Romania 2060
[18] 19 Suarez Navarro, Carla Spain 2038
[19] 20 Ivanovic, Ana Serbia 1994

The numbers get really crunchy after Bartoli, who will be in the broadcast booth!
There are 10-11 ladies in that bunch that are within 1000 point of each other!
There almost 4500 points to be scored the next few weeks.

4 Radwanska 4895

22 Cibulkova 1873
23 Vesnina 1763
24 Kuznetsova 1678
25 Hampton 1621

All of the top 3 have qualified. WTA have only announced the top 2, and they may now hold back on announcing Sharapova given she is a doubt for the rest of the season. After the US Open we should know players schedules for the rest of the season.

Kerber better win Tokyo or she will be on a freefall next year...the race will be tight between Scone,Vinci,Kerber and Janky.
I would prefer Janky and Kerber because they have personality and will spice up the YEC...especially Janky.

With Angie making the final, she will be in prime position to make the finals. Caro also made the semis. So it shall come down to who falters first at Beijing out of JJ, Vinci, Stephens, Caro, Kerber. I don't think Liscki and Halep stand a chance, but anything can happen.

So, at this point, JJ and or Caro will be the alternates?

it kinda did!
Seems like those 1000 points in Beijing can make a big difference.
Sara is a sitting duck with her 4050 points.

JJ, Caro, Stephens and Vinci are all in for a spot at the moment. It will come down down to who falters first in Beijing. Stephens and Vinci have already won their first round matches, as has Errani. So the pressure will on JJ, Caro and Kerber. Kerber's run to the final in Tokyo has spiced up things. A good result here in Beijing by either of these players will elevate that player's chances for qualification.

There are lots of potential interesting early round match ups in Beijing too. Wozniacki vs Stephens and Kerber vs Vinci are both potential R3 matches.

Kiu said:

Yes. The 1st alternate spot especially could be a big deal with doubts over Sharapova's participation.
