Moya who knows Rafa very well says: Rafa was playing well, he is in the process of changes but at the same time a little bit confused. That loss has hurt him a lot but he is going to be ok, this is the beginning of the year and I'm sure he is going to have a good year. He has been through a worse times than now because his injuries, he is now healthy and physically stronger but he need to strengthen his confidence again

It's a fascinating interview, no pre cooked answers. He seems genuinely bewildered about what happened.

That is bunch of horse crap. I have to call him out.
but then again he has to go though these dramatics for his fans and sponsors. It is very hard to walk away from $41 million a year. And he should not walk away from that much money.
he just doesn't care to win otherwise he would do something about it.
here is what Luke Jensen said. He said Rafa has no endurance and substantially reduced physical strength. Sounds familiar?
i see things 3-4 years before even the pros see it. This is not rocket science.

luke said he was with verdasco in New Delhi. He said verdasco would not leave gym alone. He said verdasco is working harder than ever on his fitness and his physical work in the gym.
you people need to wake up and smell the coffee.
rafa has no fitness. His shots have less spin and very little weight.
sounds familiar yet? I have been calling these alarming trends with Rafa  for years.
But feel free to believe Luke Henson. And he is right. He used the word endurance at least 3 times.
more later. I am on the beach.

I have to call it like I have been seeing it. It could be my own brother and I would have call it the way I see it.

at the current rate 2016 could be worse than 2015.

nothing is going to happen unless we start seeing significant changes and improvements in fitness and physical work in the gym.

and 90 minute relatively lame practice sessions have to be replaced with 2 long practice sessions a day.

monica Seles practiced 3 times a day.

he has to work.

Coaching change won't fix this.

only hunger and absutely dramatic changes in fitness and physical work in gym can fix this.

and it also  has to be on clay.

all other windows are now closed for good.

There are players that are nearly 10 years older with no weapons at all that are winning matches at slams.

ask yourself why?

They are willing to put in the time on the practice courts and on the fitness front. They are hungry for wins.

now Rafa says-- for the 10th time-- that he has nothing to prove.

get the picture yet?

are you starting to wonder yet why he has no endurance and no weight and less spin on his shots?

he doesn't care to win otherwise he would do something about it.

all windows are closing very rapidly. There is only limited time left.

it is just a damn shame that while  djokovic and his team talk about and produce continuous improvement, all Rafa can talk about is that damn "expiration date".

he just keeps repeating that he is not afraid of the expiration date. and that is after repeating that he has nothing to prove.

enough talk Rafa. go show some bloody pride of a gladiator and fight.

go fix your fitness and then fight.

This has nothing to do with fitness and it's clear he's still very fit. He's just noticeably slower and you can't recover lost speed due to age.

actually this is not rocket science. he is not fit at all given his playing style.
he is often doubling over just 20-40 minutes in practice. he is complaining about heat constantly. he even marvels at fitness of other players.

luke Jensen spent some time with verdasco in new delhi. he said that verdasco would not get out of the gym. meaning verdasco knew the importance of physical work and fitness as he is aging in order to stay relevant in the sport.

rafa is not relevant anymore. he will find to hard to get past 1-2 rounds of any slam this year. last year he failed to get past the quarters of all 4 slams.

luke who is watching rafa very closely said there is lot less spin and weight on rafa's shots.

he also used the word "endurance" in this particular interview. more specifically he said that rafa doesn't have the endurance he used to have.

again you don't have to be a rocket scientist. you can just see this. he gets tired and then he checks out. he has no will to fight but how can he fight when his style of play requires supreme endurance and superb physicality.

ferru kept him on the court for a while at the O2 arena in London and he declared after the match that he was tired and probably wont have enough time to recover for his next match.

you just saw a 35 year old Federer run circles around berdych.

well the same berdych demolished rafa last year here in Melbourne. rafa was worn out after 40 minutes of play.

he would win just 10% of the points from the baseline against berdych.

against berdych of all the people. he had owned berdych all his life on all surfaces.

do I need to go on?

rafa is not working hard enough otherwise he would be winning. you people are going to have to accept this: rafa does not care to win anymore otherwise he would be winning.

even ferru said today that he is working very hard on his fitness and that he is trying to improve.

and did I mention that ferru is 100 years old. he won 6-7 tournaments last year.

he will do better than rafa at all 4 slams.

and now rafa and tony have come with a new excuse: they are saying that the game has passed them by.

what bullshit. go work and then go win tennis matches.

this has everything to do with the lack of hunger and fire in the belly. that is why he does not put in the long hard yards on the practice courts and on the fitness front.

and it has everything to do with his fitness and his physicality. his playing style demands it.

he simply cannot win even if he had the hunger and the fire in the belly if he is not supremely fit and has lost significant muscle mass.
he does go the gym but is not doing enough physical work. it is more like a token required minimum with little or no direction. or goal.

finally the only surface where he can make a difference is clay.

it is clay or nothing.

it is not 2015 all over again.

it is going to be much worse. he refuses to do a damn thing about it. what the hell does that tell you? he absolutely refuses to change a single thing.

the man has cashed in his chips. he doesn't care to win. all this talk from him and his camp is acting and meant for public consumption.

if he wanted to win then he would do something about it.

those quarterfinal losses at slams in 2015 will become first round and second losses at slams this year.

I don't even think he can win rio and hamburg this year. I mean I am starting to think that even those 2 events will be difficult to capture.

just look at his schedule general britbox has posted. what the hell does he expect in basel? another loss to Federer. why the hell is he going there.

why is he going to Miami? when all he has left is just one clay season to try to make a little impression. he went there last year. what did it accomplish? he almost got injured.

even then he has no chance on clay at the bigger events. he does not have the fitness and the physicality to last there, let alone the ground game.

it has to start on clay and it has to start with fitness and it has to start with physical work in the gym and it has to start with laser like focus and it has to start with some sacrifices.

you heard what nalbandian said: he said it is clay or the exit.

you also heard what luke Jensen said: limited endurance and drastically reduced weight and spin on his shots.

you can just add poor to nearly pathetic movement and court positioning.

it is too much of a mountain to climb. he does not want to climb the mountain.

it is over.

and now they have come up with the ultimate excuse: the game has passed him by.

what horse shit. go work and then go beat somebody. where the hell is your pride man?

fight them to the death. you can do it because that is what you have done all your life.

$41 million to $45 million a year is hard to give up and walk away from.

but the career is clearly over since he wont work.

I am plenty happy.

I am just not happy with Rafa's pathetic work ethic. but then again it is his life and his career.

he walked away from the sport exactly when I said he walked away. there is not much we can do it about it.

he called it a career early last year. long before the clay season. we knew it was over then.

this has absolutely nothing to do with the lack of confidence. it has everything to do with having walked away from the sport. he just wont put in the long yard yards required to compete at the highest levels.

there is no fight or fire in the belly.

he wont win and he is not winning because he doesn't care to win anymore otherwise he would do something about it.

all that talk is just for public consumption.

nobody on the planet wants him to retire.

we just want to see him get fit and then go fight. we want Rafa and Roger to play, compete, and fight for another 5 years.

I understand your frustration because I feel the same. I expected something much better of him in this AO and I'm still in shock because that nonsense loss. I agree that he has too many distractions out of tennis and maybe he should be more focus and concentrate in tennis than in anything else and I'm saying that for more than one year
But I don't lose the hope, we know about his talent and his mentally strength which unfortunately has lost for awhile and like his team says: "it's more dificult to help him on that issue than when he was injury".
He played pretty good at the end of the year, he was almost there but...
Let's go to give him another opportunity, he doesn't like to lose and I know from good sources that the last loss it was the worst for him. Every cloud has a silver lining and maybe it was his definitely wake up call
In the other hand, yes, the rivalry between him and Federer has been the best in in this sport for years, both have brought the magic and emotion for all the tennis followers (and also the hatred, you know what I mean...lol) but I don't how long Roger is going to last and even he seems sometimes to be very fitted but never so good like a few years ego and behind
Meanwhile this is (or has been?) the Novak's time, he has not wasted the opportunity to play well and of course looking and knowing what is going on around him getting the confidence to the limit, good for him, but honesty I hope that someone else can bring him to the earth, someone that has the confidence to think that nobody is unbeatable, good mentality and strength of all the ways and competitive and I'm sure we'll see that soon

Five years lol? There are 2 chances of that happening. None and f**k all. Take your pick.
