He grabbed it by achieving the best results over the course of the year. If Novak beat Roger you could have claimed he grabbed it because Zverev beat Nadal. That's how these things work. You don't always go out there and play your direct rival for the number 1 ranking.

Well he had to sit there waiting for Roger to beat Novak, so had zero control.....wasn’t like he was in a position to secure the ranking by winning himself. So had nothing to do with playing Novak at all.

It doesn't have to have anything to do with playing the other guy in the running. It's about the points. In fact, IIRC, it rarely seems to come down to the 1 & 2 playing each other off for it at YEC, like it did between Murray and Djokovic in the finals there in 2016.
