The Tournament:

Roger Federer, who once served as a ball boy at the Swiss Indoors Basel, fittingly became the first player to win six titles at his hometown tournament in 2014. Switzerland's leading sport event boasts an impressive list of former champions, including tennis Hall of Famers Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg and Pete Sampras.

About City

Located on the Rhine River near the borders of France and Germany, Basel contains the country's highest concentration of museums. The culture-centric city, site of the world's most influential art market each June, is also home to the lovely Munster Cathedral, made of red sandstone with a multi-colored tile roof. Green spaces abound, including the popular zoological gardens in the city center. Switzerland's largest site of Roman ruins, Augusta Raurica, are an easy day trip to the east.

Basel is Switzerland's oldest university city. Historic landmarks of the city include the large market square with its richly decorated red sandstone town hall and the late Romanesque-Gothic cathedral. During a walk through the old town, past small boutiques, antique book shops but also shops of modern designers, a visit to the "Läckerli Huus" to try the traditional Basel honey cake is well worth your while. Basel is tradition-conscious and open-minded at the same time, a fact born out by several modern buildings designed by renowned architects such as Herzog & de Meuron, Mario Botta, Diener & Diener and Richard Meyer.

Almost 40 museums make Basel the city with the highest density of museums in the country. Internationally known museums, such as the Basel Art Museum, the museum devoted to the iron sculptor Jean Tinguely, the Fondation Beyeler and the Museum of Cultures attract a great many visitors, as do several galleries and playhouses. Basel is among other things home to the symphony orchestra and the chamber orchestra as well as the musical theatre featuring international productions. And a wide range of classical and contemporary productions are shown on the stages of the Basel Theatre and the Playhouse.

Federer has been nursing a hand injury since the summer...

Can't say I'm thrilled to see him make excuses. And if this was even a semi-serious issue he was a bumbling fool to play tournaments such as Stuttgart, Halle, Cincy, Laver Cup, and Shanghai.

Also, how would it not be an issue now? Was it healed after flailing around for 8 hours of court time in Shanghai?

Hmm, there is no reason to believe that continuing to use a strained body part would make it alright. Or is there? Common sense says no. And, I don't have any practical experience.

Federer's not the one to make excuses. And this is not the most compelling time of his career too! He's had a good year cause he won a slam. He didn't win a slam for 5 years and never had to make an excuse. So, I'd not think this is an excuse.

Kind of agree with this. He generally lets on about any injuries or ailments a long time after it was relevant.

It could be a legit injury (I'm sure it was) and still come off as an excuse for poor play. Roger was obviously hurt last year in Montreal but I didn't really see him make an excuse for losing ugly to Del Po at USO even though his back was clearly not right.

Regardless, the main issue is that he was apparently dumb enough to play non-majors while his hand was hurt which is shocking since it is almost all about majors at this point.

If Fed doesn't win this then he needs to take a serious look at himself and his game.

However, Fed has said that he is fine from the point of time he played Laver Cup in Chicago. So, it does not explain losing to Borna in Shanghai which is supposed to be the fastest court in the whole circuit.

A hand injury or a discomfort? if it's an injury he shouldn't play

True. He's looked jaded. Not sure everything can be attributed to the hand injury.
