Why cringing? And I think you should read the blog post. First-person account of why Stan might have won the AO. And I, for one, put him as #3 with most potential for the FO, at this moment. OK, not so much for Wimbledon. ;) As to the USO, it depends on his year, but he's still deep in the mix, though not top 5, at this point, or likely even by August.

Because El Dude was being sarcastic. Obviously no one but Stan can possibly win a calendar slam this year as he won the AO but no one expects him to and that was the point

That'd be the biggest shock in sports history if he won the next 3 slams :D

I agree. I too feel he is favorite #3 (not just because of his current ranking) after
Rafa and Novak. Same cannot be said at Wimby or USO (to a lesser extent) even if
he maintains the ranking.

I'm not sure what he's shown at Wimbledon, but he really has always been a threat on clay. Will be interesting to see how he makes his way through the clay tournaments, tbh. He might make real waves, given his tailwind.

Agreed with the man, men should have ambition and his words are obviously backed up by results. Only in the last two Slams he's beaten Murray, Djoker and Nadal (in that order).

Stan has a long pedigree on clay. He was the finalist in Rome in the year in which
Rafa had blisters on foot. He has defeated Fed in Montecarlo in 2009. He generally
does a decent job in the clay tournaments leading upto the RG. However, I cannot
remember him ever doing a decent job at RG.

It would be foolish of him not to try to peak at RG this year. (That said, Ferrer always squanders his clay chops elsewhere.)

As Moxie alludes, RG is possible for Stan if he doesn't overplay beforehand. I hear they might cancel the Portugal tourney, and anyway, now that he has an AO in the bag, he is in a different situation. He doesn't have to play the 250 events for his income portfolio. He's had a bit of bad luck in the past on the clay prior to RG with various minor injuries that hampered him from performing at his best at RG. Let's see if that changes.

Contrary to others here, I think he has an outstanding chance at the US Open if he gets there in good health. I put him in the top 3 at the moment with a good chance to win it all. He's proven himself against all 3 of the usual suspects (ND, RN, AM). He still has something to prove against his countryman, which is a challenge. But the US Open is still a long way away, and much can happen.

I don't see him going far at Wimbledon, but with supreme confidence, who knows? :)

One major in a year is still an outstanding accomplishment, and even in a career, but there is a lot to be said for striking again while the iron is hot. Let's see what happens.

Respectfully,
masterclass

Except Garcia-Lopez.

I heard that makes him delusional.

To be fair, all he said was if I am playing my best (which he did not do this week) I CAN beat them. He did not say he always will, but we wouldn't want a new player to be confident and take some of the lime light I guess. Best to slam a guy who has never won more than a 250 before this year, coming of age and winning a slam and master for the first time ever at age 29 all in a three month period...

In fairness, Stan is probably trying to navigate the new territory he finds himself in, both in tennis terms and PR ones. It's not like Djokovic in 2011, who took his game from a pretty top level to the very top, which really only a half-step. Stan has gone from very nice middling results to he spot-light, and rather late career. He will probably keep feeling out his level the rest of this year. But he only has a couple of years to capitalize on his status. We'll see how he manages it.

Well I think he's a bit premature! Right now he hasn't even reached Murray's level! With his age, he has a limited shelf life and should pull back on the editorial commentary even if he thinks he's only speaking about himself! :puzzled :s  :(
