Im happy to see Petra and Woz win today. It completes a narrative of two very talented players fixing their wayward game all year and returning to a more consistent place in the top 10.

Now the situation in the white group is still wide open. Everybody can advance and everybody can be out of semis depending on the last 2 matches. Obviously in the best position is Caro. If she wins a set with Petra she will be in the semis and unles Aga beats Masha 2-0 she will be the winner of the group. On the other hand Masha is in the worst situation. If she loses a set with Aga she will be eliminated from the tournament. As of now Patra and Aga are tied and if both of them win, they will be tied with Caro. If both of them lose they will be tied with Masha. In that case everything will go to the set win percentage and eventually games win percentage.

Where was this type of serving yesterday Serena? Shakes my head, lol. Also, the return is a lot better too! I guess when your back is against the wall you play better.

She played like she was sore, she had those series of splits that could have contributed if her knee was not 100%.She just looks bored and is not feeling the crowd..

Well Serena certainly improved her chances with this win and score of making the semis. Now all Serena needs is for Simona to win a set or win in two and Serena makes it to the semis. If Ana beats Simona in two then things become interesting depending on the score.

I am going to say semis: Serena vs. Caro and Halep vs. Kvitova. I think Halep has an interesting prospect tank and insure Serena doesn't make the semis or accrue as many points as possible to try and get the number 2 seed for the Australian Open.

Confirmed from WTA: Serena Williams qualifies for the semis unless Ana Ivanovic beats Simona Halep in straight sets on Friday.

I remember we were talking who will be #1 just 3 days ago...
Now, there's a chance #1 won't make it and #2 is out.
#8 is at the top of white group and #4 at top of red group.

Here is the record for white group after 4 days of competition.

Caro 2-0
Petra 1-1
Aga 1-1
Masha 0-2

I can't imagine Halep tanking against Ana.
1. It would be too obvious and nobody wants that story line going into next year.
2. I think there's very few players with that little respect for the game that they would do that.
3. She loses money if she loses a match...just saying money talks!

wow pova eliminated from the event with this comprehensive defeat..

Not quite, she still has an outside chance. If Caro wins over Petra too and Maria win over
Aga, then Caro will be the winner of white group with 3 wins and the other three girls will
each have 1 win and whoever has the best % of sets won (or best % of games won to
further resolve ties) would make it to SF.

Only thing that we can say for sure is that Maria cannot be the winner of white group
any more.

Ruthless response from Serena. Genie go back to the drawing board.

Maria has become an absolute mess outside of clay.

*sad face* - This was a very disappointing tournament for Masha and all her supporters - However Petra played brilliantly and was on the roll - When she is and her serve is working as it did today few players can defeat her - Well done Petra

As for Masha - Fly home and get some well deserved rest - You've done well this year - Charge your batteries and be a force @ the AO next year - Go Masha!!!

Wow!! HOUDINI didn't disappear after a Maria loss for a change.

maybe pig do fly...

Here is the current situation in the Red Group with only one match left to be played.

1. If Halep wins the match against Ana (independent of in how many sets),
Halep wins the Red Group and Serena will be the runner up (as Halep
will have 3 wins, Serena 2 wins, Ana 1 win and Genie 0 wins).

2. If Ana wins the match in three sets, Halep wins the Red Group and Serena
will be runner up (as Serena, Halep and Ana all will have 2 wins each and
Halep has 5 sets won out of 7, Serena 4 out of 6 and Ana 4 out of 7).

3. If Ana wins the match in three sets, we have an interesting situation.
Serena, Halep and Ana all will have 2 wins each. Further, all would
have won 4 sets out of 6 and so % of sets won will also be tied.
So, it will come to percentage of games won. Serena has won
52.17% of games and is done. We will know the % of games won
by Ana and Halep after the last match. The two girls with the
highest % of games won will advance to SF. While theoretically,
Serena still has a chance even in this scenario, her prospects
are not good in this scenario.

I agree that she seems like too much of a professional. And I always see her giving thanks/doing the cross after all of her matches.
