After Serena's match against Halep it's lucky for her she's finishing up the RR against a slumping overwhelmed Bouchard. It's pretty much a guarantee to make the SF.

As we've seen this year in tennis, nothing is a guarantee. If Genie loses to Ana today, she may just be motivated tomorrow of avoiding the label of this year's punching bag. Serena will have to raise her level.

Genie has beaten Ana twice so she can win in three..

My selections are,

Caroline, really loved the way she held tough and won her match against Maria.Caroline to win against Aga.

Sharapova and Petra, both their previous matches were plain ugly to say the least,Maria set a new record for the ufe? Petra ufe was dam ugly,Petra also looked spent to me in her match against Aga.
It is a difficult match to predict going on both ladies present form?...my feelings are,the player that can serve consistent, keep their ufe to a minimum, generally play the more aggressor game will win.
Petra to finally right the ship,in a close encounter.

Serena will be too strong for Bouchard, after watching Bouchard v Ana match which was just completed.

In the doubles match Black/Mirza to win.

What are Serena's chances now of holding on to the #1 spot?

That's if Genie plays, she may pull out and unleash Kerbie.

Order of play Thursday 23 October 2014 - local time - TIMEZONE calculation

This terrible scheduling; only WTA would do this.

Serena's match against Genie should be scheduled after the match between
Ana and Halep. This is because, if Serena loses (I know it is hypothetical), then
Halep would know that she can tank the match and still be guaranteed of a spot
in SF.

In ATP scheduling, they always schedule matches in such a way that when
possible this kind of situation is avoided.

I would like to remind people that in view of Maria's loss yesterday, they are still
even. This means, if Serena can reach the finals with 2-1 RR record(she does not even
have to win the finals), she would attain YE #1, independent of what Maria may or
may not be doing from now on.

This basically involves winning two matches, the one against Genie and
the one against her SF opponent.

But, there is one more issue here. If Serena wins over Genie, but Halep loses to
Ana, then there would be three players with 2 wins each and the semifinalists would
be decided based on percentage of sets won and percentage of games won. This
would seriously hurt Serena as she did not win any set against Halep and also
managed to win just two games.

So, Serena should either hope that Halep wins again (in which case, Serena
will get in as long as he wins her match, efficiency does not matter) or she has
to be ruthless against Genie and serve a double bagel or something like that
to be safe.

Yeah isn't tennis great - I really like when it's unpredictable. Of course not if Caro loses but in general. Not much fun seeing a match you know is done beforehand - guess that's why so few followed Serenas match here on Tennisfrontier :D Well let's have a look at tomorrows matches. Caroline should with the play she has right now be able to beat Aga again. Maria vs Petra - there you go - if Petra is on top she can win and if .... she loses - will be fun to watch me thinks. Serena vs Genie - Serena should be safe because after two losses not much is left in Genie but claim for a holiday and rest. She could withdraw but I think she'll play 70 points are 70 points and you get some pocket money too.

The dark clouds are IF Genie withdraws then Kerber is in and that's another story then Serena has to prestart her diesel engine.

Aga and Caroline having fun

I thought they get 160 points for each RR match won, apart from the spare change.

I'm talking about Bouchard who'll get 70 points for each loss. Here is - again -
This is what's all about - money and points

alternates prizes: $50,000
RR no wins prizes: $135,000 US; points: 210 3 x 70
RR 1 win prizes: $275,000 US; points: 370 2 x 70 + 230
RR 2 wins prizes: $415,000 US; points: 530 1 x 70 + 2 x 230
RR 3 wins prizes: $555,000 US; points: 690 3 x 230
SFs
loser's prize: RR prize + $36,500 US
Final
loser's prize: RR prize + $535,000 US; points: RR points + 360
winner's prize: RR prize + $1,590,000 US; points: RR points +360 + 450

If players win the same number of matches, the winner of their head-to-head match in the round robin is placed higher in the standings. 3-way ties will be resolved first by the percentage of sets won, then by the percentage of games won.

To Americans - why not plan a tour to Europe - like eg. Denmark - this is a relatively friendly country and we brew damn good beer me thinks :)

This is a scam. How can somebody be awarded points for losing a match? and that too large
amounts.

If you lose all three RR matches, you get 210 points and that is almost like winning a
minor event.

Only WTA is capable of coming up with such cheap schemes. In ATP, even if you
make it to WTF, you come back with 0 points if you lose all three matches. You do
get some money for losing the matches though.

ATP formula is 200 points for each RR win and 0 points for each RR lost.

Additional 400 points if you win SF and another 500 points if you win F.

So, undefeated winner will get 1500 points (same as the undefeated winner of WTAF).

But, someone who looses all three RR matches goes home with 0 points. Ferrer did
so one year and Nadal did so one year.

This is shameful scheme.

Under this scheme, Genie should not even consider withdrawing.

p.s. Are there bonus ranking points if you lose via a double bagel? :cover

It's 70 points for each match, not too bad. I guess if they awarded 40-50 you wouldn't call it a scam?!
This is WTA friend, they set their own rules, don't you tell us what those men do over at ATP.
:ras:
What about $50,000 for alternates? They don't even play.
:)
But it's a very exclusive club, only 10 are invited!

Yeah I'm with you on this... I feel like the YEC always produces at least 1 group with an unpredictable end where we are all biting our nails to see who makes it through. While on the first day it always feels a bit boring because there's only 2 matches and we're all used to seeing so many, by day two interesting story lines develop.
