2013 World track and field 1,500 champion Abeba Aregawi of Sweden also tested positive for traces of meldonium.

There is an interesting article on the drug written before it was prohibited.

https://www.researchgate.net/public...high_accuracy_mass_spectrometry_Mildronate_Me

"Due to the growing body of evidence (black market products and athlete statements) concerning its misuse in sport, adequate test methods for the reliable identification of Mildronate are required, especially since the substance has been added to the 2015 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) monitoring program."

actually @britbox I think she got in front of this. She'll have a lot more control of the narrative. It smells a little fishy, but she's given enough to those who'll want to support her to keep her good with most sponsors. Let's face it, if sponsors are still willing to support Gatlin why not her?

She was also silently banned and the forearm nonsense was bs same as Cilic's fake injury they made when he was already banned. Sharadopa was charged on March 2nd. Oh yeah but it's 'cos of her forearm injury she can't play Indian Wells. Pull the other one lol.

She wasn't silently banned, and nor was Cilic. They have to go through a thing called Due Process. So Maria was charged on March 2 - that doesn't say that she was "found guilty and immediately banned." In fact, she waived her right to a B sample test, which would then have to take place. The fact that tennis players remove themselves from the tour while due process is taking place isn't evidence of silent bans...

It will be the start of other endless discussions once they decide how long she will be banned : As a top player, all in her "Sharapova-ness" it could be suicidal to ban her for a long time (and probably the end of her career) for the WTA. I can imagine the pressure from some tournaments, sponsors,etc.. Short ban, and we will hear again that ATP/WTA protect the top players...

Very curious to see how it goes !

I have imagined everything about this press conference but I really haven't seen it coming :)

Don't get me wrong - I think she's handled the announcement well... but would be very surprised if she doesn't take a big hit commercially, particularly from sports-related sponsors. It might not be immediate but when contracts come up for renewal... then I don't think she'll have anything like the same clout.... plus she won't be on the tour for the immediate future. Does Gatlin have any sponsors? I'm sure he does, but not on the same scale as he would have if he was perceived as clean.

It's a silent ban. What the hell else is the reason for Cilic's fake injury bs that they clearly made up? He wasn't playing for quite some time and was already banned. The media released the story months later. Hence, silent ban. For the record they have also silently banned tennis officials so the ITF/ATP/WTA are a complete joke and silents bans are 100% NOT a myth.

What kind of health issues she has had for ten years that she was taking that medicine?

This article about that medicine is from October 2015

I guess she's been taking it for performance enhancement and made a mistake by not stopping when they banned it. I find it incredible that nobody from Team Sharapova monitored the WADA changes. Either somebody is incredibly negligent or incredibly reckless.

Interesting article, thanks for posting.

If this part is true:

As of January 1, 2016, WADA will continue to permit the use of telmisartan and liothyronine but will ban any athlete who tests positive for meldonium for a period of 4 years (if it is a first-time anti-doping violation).

then Maria's career is effectively over.

At the time Cilic removed himself from tennis, citing an "injury", he was still being investigated but hadn't been found guilty of anything. Due process was being followed. But I'm sure he knew he was facing a ban.

With Maria, she was only "charged" on March 2, and she waived the right to have her B sample tested. There's no silent ban there...

Yeah and if it's all so above board then why are they all claiming bs fake injuries? Charged on March 2nd and hasn't played since January. Wonder why. Unless people want to actually be so naive as to think she skipped the other tournaments 'cos of a forearm injury... :cover

4 years? Holy crap, well if that doesnt have a detterent effect I dont know what would! Imagine all the prize money and titles she is forfeiting now.

I feel this is a bit too harsh on her. I would say 2 years ban. 4 years is a lot for a first offender. On the other hand, a second offence should be a lifelong ban IMO.

Of course they use fake injuries. I'm sure that she knew something was in the wind soon after Oz, but it took until March 2nd til she was charged. After this, she would have the option to defend herself, which she waived, and came public. But it's important to note that somebody being charged with an offence isn't the same thing as them being found guilty. And when they remove themselves from play to deal with this, that isn't the same thing as a silent ban.

Maria Sharapova didn't serve a silent ban, based upon what we've been told...

I agree it's a joke. A joke that it took them till now to actually catch anyone remotely famous.

There's a job going here if anyone's interested. For real. Tennis Anti-Doping Programme Assistant for the ITF.

She will just serve her 2 year suspension and comeback just like Martina Hingis. The tennis world will forget about it and she will be the best thing ever just like Hingis. I say this with sarcasm.
