If they went with the letter of the law, then Maria should actually get a four year ban.

Something tells me she will get around 6 months, most of which she's served already. She might be back in time for Wimbledon.

I'm sure that's what's going to happen and it's sad.

Sharapova may never play again after positive doping test - Russian tennis chief

The situation of Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova is "bad" after she tested positive for the banned substance meldonium and she may never play again, R-Sport news agency quoted Shamil Tarpishchev, the president of the Russian Tennis Federation, as saying on Thursday.

It looks like that is the end of Dominatrix.

Shamil is quite reliable. His statement means that they are not expecting anything less than 2 year ban. With she already being 29, coming after two years will be very difficult.

The whole irony here is that Maria thought she is doing the damage control operations cleverly by admitting to taking Meldonium even after Jan 1st. Oh Boy, little did she know that it could be the real damage as the lawyers could have argued better without that admission.:laydownlaughing

Shamil backtracks on his statement that Maria is done. But, I believe the first statement. He probably realized it is not a good idea to make such statements before the verdict is delivered and backtracked.

All eyes are watching, they better believe the results from this will establish perhaps a precedent. It might also not sit well with the lower tier of players who already feel that key players get away with things they most certainly wouldn't if she gets a pass. I think they know this which anything less than 6 months won't be looked upon favorably. She deserves 2 years in my eyes, but I think that might drive her to retire which the powers that be wouldn't want.

Why the hell would they want her she's tainted material. She has brought shame to the sport and should be band for a least 2 or more years. She will always be associated the PEDs.

Why is Shamil leaking all this info? He is probably trying to manipulate the media or scare the ITF into a short ban by hinting of her retirement. I don't trust him nor anyone else in Russian sports. After that 60 Minutes report about the doping at Sochi, all Russians should be banned from the Olympics. Their medals should be stripped. I am still fuming about the blatant cheating in figure staking.

The whole thing is ridiculous. Maria had it made in the shade. There was no reason to risk tainting her career. No matter what she did she wasn't going to beat Serena Williams. Serena is more talented, a better mover, a better server, and has a higher tennis IQ. Maria should have stuck to what was working for her. Anna Kournikova knew where her money came from and she played her role perfectly. She didn't allow the "humiliation" of not winning a singles title to make her succumb to the pressure. She took her lumps and smiled happily to the bank without scandal.

Sometimes that competitiveness and self-imposed pressure can make the entire house of cards topple. Regardless of what happens, Maria's legacy is tainted. That's sad.

Good point. He is playing games. It looks like the hearing is over though. We should know the ban in about a week.

Well, I am sure WADA will appeal if they feel it is too lenient. I am sure in their eyes anything less than a year is unacceptable.

WADA has a new chief who already has said that Maria's destiny is with ITF. See my earlier posts for a link to that.

Makes me want to puke. Gutless bunch if she's back for the Olympics :nono Then again, given the doubles player I mentioned in a post below got a 3 month ban for doping what do you expect. Disgusting.

I don't think she will get off that easy as she admitted taking it after Jan 1. I think you'll see her out at least the rest of this season. I think signing up for summer tournaments is more wishful thinking, posturing and trying to influence the decision. If they give her a slap on the wrist, it will open the floodgates for dopers. Future excuses would be endless.
