As expected, when you play awful tennis all year you aren't suddenly turning it around. The plug should have been pulled on 2013 the second he got mauled by Robredo. Now he is becoming a laughing stock and one who won't have the extra rest and mental refreshment he needs in order to turn this around.

He still wants to get to the WTF though Darth. There's not much point pulling the plug now and he's probably getting some rest with these early exits.

I'd written this year off to a degree already. Next year is probably his last shot at making some hay and I think he'll come back with something.

He won a major and got back to #1 with that wand last year. I don't think that's the root of his problems for a minute.

I agree, I don't think he should pull it now. But I do think he should have done so after USO. He is getting some extra rest with the awful losses but not enough, and it certainly can't help the confidence.

I thought Roger played half decent in the second. Of course, Monfils runs everything down (sure, injured) and gives you one more shot to hit. Roger is not there where he can hit winner after winner.
Back to the drawing board. Another tough loss. Boy, what a year it has been for him.

his wand is only part of the problem but its something he can control/alter, its not the only reason obviously, I didn't think I had to give a blow by blow account about federers decline..obviously he is low on confidence, age 32+ bit slower, not as crisp in shotmaking etc,,blahblahblah

and all that "he won a major and got to no 1" routine won't wash because that was a long time ago now..things change quickly in top level sport esp at his age in tennis.

Agree things change quickly, but the point was I don't think changing the racquet is going to be a magic fix. I think you nailed it with the point on confidence.

As Viper said to Maverick in Top Gun: "Right now, you have a confidence problem".

T-Berd is gone. Knocked out in the final set breaker by Nico.

Bad day all around for Fed. He and Chinese doubs partner exit the tournament 10-8 in the super tiebreaker.

Berlocq-Nadal is the most entertaining tennis of the week so far. The World Number One raises the level of everyone whom he plays (although admittedly Berlocq was already something, only lost 5 points on serve during the entire Isner match). This is the fastest Nadal has moved since about 2008.

With the score 6-1 3-3, the stats show:
Nadal 23 winners 7 unforced errors
Berlocq 17 winners 8 unforced errors

Wawrinka is having one heck of a year, certainly on the way to representing Switzerland at the 2016 Olympics. Speaking of Rio, World Number One Nadal played a jaw-dropping tie-breaker just now, and finished with 35 winners 14 unforced errors in the 6-1 7-6 victory over the dynamite Berlocq.

Huge win for Wawrinka. He now overtakes Fed in the updated Race for London who becomes 8th after his loss to Monfils. Gasquet is about 100 points behind. If Tsonga makes the semis here, he'll stay in contention. So Fed needs to either outscore Gasquet in the next few weeks or hope that Murray withdraws from the YEC. Either way it's going to be a very close race between Stan, Fed, Gasquet and Tsonga till the bitter end. Haas is unfortunately pretty much out of it and Raonic needs a miracle.

Roger has reached a really low level. I don't have much hope in his level at WTF.
It is his confidence that is not there.

But its refreshing to see Federer fight for sets (not just matches....sets) on such a regular basis. I prefer this type of Federer over all other versions of him. Hopefully we get to see a few more years of it.

lolz :snigger right now Federer really does have a confidence problem..i bet he will not play shanghai again..see his big wave to the fanz..its v humid and I suppose still hot out there, not ideal weather late in the season if you are a 32yr old tennis pro..

still, semi'fast indoor hc in comfy Europe..better days ahead hopefully. :)
