^ That goes back to baseline play. They showed the stat at the end that Roger won about 10 more points in the 5-9 shot range and it was 9-8 in his favor in the 10+ range too.

I agree with what the commentators said. When you watch that type of match up on a fast court, how can you not want to see more of this. Not just baseline slogathons...

The final question is what does Simon say?

Does he have a say in this?
You have to give him a chance because he's defeated Fed before, but I think Rog will be extra motivated tomorrow since he's never won this title and a chance to get back to #1

I can imagine Roger losing to someone (like Tsonga) who overpowers him, but not
against Simon in a Final of ATP 1000.

Yes, Roger has lost to Simon before. I could remember one match at least. This was
in Canada Masters in 2008 or so. Roger basically lost concentration in that match.
Roger will not lose concentration in a final and Simon is not the overpowering type,
he is counterpuncher.

Roger won Shanghai in 2006, kskate.

She is referring to Shanghai ATP 1000 which Roger has never won.

Roger won WTF in Shanghai before.

Right, but its only been an ATP 1000 for a few years - before that it was a Masters Series, which is the equivalent.

Well it was Madrid until 2009 (Roger won Madrid in 2006) so it's not too surprising that Roger hasn't won the Master Event in Shanghai. 2 of Roger's YEC wins were there.

No. Before, Shanghai was the host of WTF which is a totally different event.

When ATP stopped letting Shanghai host WTF, they gave Shanghai the 1000 event
as a consolation prize.

That's got to be the best he has played from the baseline in a very long time. Great serving and I thought Roger returned the first serve very well today as well. Not a single break point chance for Nole in 2 sets, that doesn't happen every day.
Agree. Watched a full match after a long time and so happy to see Roger win. Some great points by both.

I stand corrected.

I just hope he can keep this up going into Australia. Fingers crossed he secures number 2 so he's got his own half there. Then we can only hope Rafa and Novak face each other!

I feel it's difficult to draw any conclusion from this match as far as Majors are concerned. Nole is a different animal in best of five format.

He should definitely finish top 2 now so he will have that 50-50 chance that both are on the opposite half.

It's less about how he matches up to Novak in a slam, and more about his general performance. If he builds up a lot of confidence, then he will get deep. Then anything can happen

i agree. whenever he plays novak or andy their matches can go either way depending on how fed is playing. its not a foregone conclusion like when he plays rafa

Fairly incredible result for Roger today. Totally surprising, not because of any other reason than I think Nole should be dispatching a 33 year old routinely by now. But obviously Roger is playing at levels unknown to old geezers from previous eras. He must have been exceptional today, to sweep aside Novak in straights... :clap

He was, Kieran, although the match was closer than the score looked. There were a lot of long games, although most of them were on Novak's serve, so maybe it only seemed closer than it looked because of Novak's ability to come back.

If he plays like this at the WTF he'll be hard to beat.

You'd have liked it Kieran. It was the kind of tennis you don't as much. Great volleying and att king tennis. These two have played the two highest quality matches of the year IMO.
