Serious question, could John McEnroe, today, beat Azarenka or Serena today in two out of three?

Why or why not?

He still plays amazing on the seniors against Lendl, Sampras, Courier, Chang, Martin, etc....

Luxilon, I'll try to answer your question with more consideration. I have to say McEnroe would have a chance, because of his net game. He has enough serve to hold his own, and more finesse than either Serena or Vika, IMO. That said, I think he has more finesse than a lot of the current top men, as well. However, he is 54. Of the two, I'd say Serena might get him, even though she's over 30. I do think she's as competitive as he is.

I'm not sure if he's a terrible set up, or an interesting one, overall. What if you put up McEnroe...one set...against a lot of the "up-and-comers" or otherwise men in the top 30? We've been asking ourselves if these guys have enough nerve to step-up. JMac has loads of nerve, and competitiveness. (Read: "brass ones.") I wonder how many of those guys he might get, for one set?

By the same token, might not the other question be, could Martina Navratilova beat Serena or Vika? If you're just comparing greats from a different era....

I think Mac would take them, even now.

And, to be honest, it would be routine. His service games would be dominant against either. He happens to be in good shape too.

are you really saying JMac would be an underdog then? "he would have a chance?"..... hmmm, i think Serena and Vika would need to step up their game to 'have a chance'.

Interesting thoughts.

First, the question came about because a few years ago I saw Mac hitting with Vika. He was really have a time of it handling her pace.

Secondly, I think they would pass him and force him to react a lot quicker off the ground then would want to. But who knows.

As far as Mac taking on the the up an comers..that is a farce. I saw him play a guy ranked 450 in the world in team tennis and get absolutely plastered. He can't even beat Sampras or Rafter now, who are over 40!!! We need to get real!

Does he have brass ones? You bet? Will he fight to the death? You bet.

Martina COULD beat them in prime with everyone using the same equipment.

Serena in my opinion would give Mac a hiding.

They both hit with precision and power near the lines...he won't be able to cover the court. He could hold with precise serve and volley.

obviously watching WTA tennis too much would blind their fans, they probably think Serena is better than Federer too :D

Serena has no weapon to beat JMac, even though he is well into 50s. A match between them would embarrass WTA totally, since some grandpa could easily toy with the supposedly greatest female candidate - that naturally their fans would be forced to admit WTA tennis is not all that good, bad for business. Obviously WTA fans can still live in delusion and denial, as long as WTA player avoid the 'real' matches. Ever wondered why Serena never dared to challenge a rubbish baller like Braasch again? she knows WAY BETTER than you clueless fans that she'd be humiliated.

As for Vika? she is not even as good as Serena, her only chance is to play naked :D

Their precision and power are only good for bad players, it's way short of being competent against elite players. Serena is probably the most powerful player WTA has ever seen, but putting her in ATP and she would be considered useless.

McEnroe is not Federer. He is an OLD man. Serena serves harder than

than him. It would be a replay of King/Riggs

And I would pay to see that Vika match

Listen, I agree about WTA tennis general. They are delusional with their equal prize money and empty seats.

But..Serena would whip MAC IMO. Yes, Vika would win 0 and 0 if she played naked.

Serena can't beat JMac, get over it. Riggs beat Court easily, you think King won a real match? Court was better than King, and people back then knew Riggs made money by betting..... think about the odds he'd have by throwing it to King. Court was considered fav against Rigg, but after that match Rigg was the fav vs King.

I've seen Serena and JMac playing live, JMac is just way better.

That is just delusional. Bringing up Riggs and Court is joke. This is 2013. Like I said, JMac cannot even
beat a college player today, not to mention he barely beats a fat 50 something Lendl.
