It is now confirmed on the Rome website that Sharapova pulled out. Errani into the semis. I hate to be Sam or Vika in that semi because the crowd will heavily favor Errani being so close to the end. When was the last time an Italian player made it this close to the winner's circle?

Just heard that Maria withdraws from Rome. No idea if it's true or not or if she has some kind of injury.

It's true. She is out citing a viral illness. Errani moves onto the SF and Vika's match has been slotted as the night match today.

Now really, whom amongst us thought Maria would pull out before Serena?

Well hopefully Serena will stay in it. Looks like she will defend her points from last year extending her lead over Sharapova.

Serena is through quite comfortably. She is really looking comfortable on the clay. I like the focus.

She's serving much better starting at the Madrid final. It's why she has been dominant this week. I went back and watched the QF match from Madrid and the serving was really terrible from someone of her caliber. I'm not saying the footwork was great, but she was actually starting the points w/ a spinning serve and not really going for her shot. This week she appears to have a better rhythm and thus more aces, service winners and setup shots for easy putaways. This bodes well going into RG.

good riddance..

Calm down Tossip. No one here should be celebrating someone's demise. Besides, I was under the impression you were looking forward to another Serena/Maria final.

Come-on JJ!
JJ ate a bagel in the second set!!

Go girl...
Take the deciding set and set up the rematch in the semis with Serena.

What a roller coaster, up 3-0 in the decider, JJ's game fell apart, got broken twice and lost 3 games in a row to Simona for a 3-3 tie!
But then JJ breaks back to gain the lead 4-3 only to be broken again for 4-4 tie.
Seems like neither lady can hold serve, JJ breaks Simona at 15 to gain a 5-4 lead and now will serve for the match.

What an effing loser Jankovic is this is why she will never win the big one. Closing the deal. You were up 3-0 in the third, and you had an opportunity to serve it out at 40-15 and you didn't. Loser!

Simona has been coming up with some great winners.

I don't think either of these two will give Serena much trouble after their exhausting two and a half hour ordeal.

Simona was the better player today, she scored more, broke more and made less mistakes, JJ was just not good at crucial points, she made numerous stupid errors there at the end like smashing an overhead in her own court!

Ridiculous statement!!

Sloane makes it to the semi's of a slam, and Robson the 4th round of a slam and they are overrated?

Yet, Halep makes it to the semi's of ROME and she's the real thing.....hmmm???
