Andy has pulled out of the French Open following medical advice. Gutted. :(

Probably for the best - Wimbledon has to be the priority for Andy Murray.

What a bummer, Iona. This will be the 3rd consecutive slam w/ at least one of the big 4 not in attendance.

I hope Murray gets in playing shape for Wimby. That's the big one for him I think.

Sure, plus he needs to think about defending the USO.

RE: Roland Garros Injury Reports: Murray Out, Del Potro Doubtful

bummer. real sorry to hear that. i do hope that he's well soon enough to get perfectly prepared for SW19. he's been mostly disappointing (me) since the USO, so i do hope now will be the time for him to get down and make a huge move (let's face it, a Wimby title would, in the UK, be probably just as big as the first slam was). *fingerscrossed*

ranking/seeding ramifications... true, Roger isn't guaranteed to go Rafa-less before the final anymore. no real change for Novak. real nice for Ferrer - although given last year's result at RG, it'd be offensive to complain about a lopsided draw with Ferrer in it - at least not any more lopsided than it would've been w/ Andy.
the qf slots could become wide-open. Gasquet is guaranteed a 'qf' seed at 7 or 8. if DelPo (and Stan) were to be forced out as well. depending on this week's result, Cilic (remember him? ;) ) or Tipsy could get a nice spot as well. sure wouldn't be fun to watch for the guy who happens to draw Tomas (and, to a lesser degree, Jo-Wilfried) - unless of course that guy is Rafa.

long term ranking effect: getting close to impossible to take the ye#1 from Novak. ironically, it's Rafa who has the best shot, by a mile, but as i said before, his natural perspective, rankings-wise, would be the week after the AO.

sad but expected news...poor Andy
Let's see if Delpo and Stan the man can play
Federer will be seed N°2 in RG, he'll avoid Nole in semi but he'll probably have Nadal or Ferrer on his road

Just read on twitter that Del Potro has pulled out of the French Open. Such a shame.

shame indeed. it'd mean that a third of all active slam winners are missing in this one (ratio would be even higher if not for Lleyton).

I am looking at these withdrawals, feeling upset, but also wondering how the hell Roger has gone all these years without missing a slam, at a time where tennis is so physical...It is amazing.

Incredible alright. Over the years whenever he's had lingering pains you can see he just doesn't bother trying to run down balls for nothing unless he knows he has a chance to win the point. One of the main reasons he's been virtually injury free all these years is not over exerting himself for nothing. Will be a shame if Wawrinka pulls out (hoping he still plays) as he just played too many matches in a short period of time and now he's paying for it just at the wrong time.

I see that Mardy Fish and Brian Baker from the US have also withdrawn. And just last year Baker's comeback was part of the story at RG.

^ that's very sad. i'd been following Brian's comeback, it was quite remarkable. Fish's struggles are, at this point, also something like a neverending story. i wonder how much longer he'll keep the motivation up.

Just read on the NYT that Mardy Fish and Brian Baker have also pulled out. They will be replaced by Joao Sousa of Portugal, and Guido Pella of Argentina.

Also, John Millan, an Australian wild card, has withdrawn due to shoulder injury, and will be replaced by Nick Kyrgios of Australia.

Yes, Fish is citing his heart problem. I don't know if that's something that's going to get better, plus he's 31 now. I wonder if he's one of the next in line to retire.

...and he should, no? I mean he should worry about stuff like , uhm, LIVING, as opposed to tennis at this point...It is not a pulled muscle, it is his heart. I admire his efforts to stick around but at some point he should prioritize things in his life. Of course, I have no clue about his condition so I might be talking out of my behind, but I just worry about the guy...:-/

It is easy.... if you are born with good genes and you don't redline yourself unless necessary, you would be well-conditioned. Easy to say i know...

Yes, he didn't, but look at his style of play. He will not get in his 90-95% of his matches into never ending groundstroke exchanges like Murray does for example.
And to be honest injuries are bound to happen in every sport, with their oen specifics, affecting different parts of bodies.
tennis has become a tough sport with hard strokes, gazzillions of baselines and as they age, they will have more and more problems.
I have one recipe, shorten the points, you prolong your career.
S/V anyone? Aha, there is one, Tommy Haas, the oldest one. No wonder!

What sucks about Murray's withdrawal is that he hasn't had a competitive tournament since winning Miami. The term "match toughness" is very true and I find hard to place expectation for Andy this upcoming Wimbledon if the injury prevents him from training the way he would like to.

Hopefully I'm wrong and we see him at the business end of SW19 fighting for the Crown.

RE: Roland Garros Injury Reports: Murray Out, Del Potro Doubtful

I'm more worried long term about Del Po than Murray. I sense that Murray could give it a go if he wanted to but he is being smart and skipping a grueling tournament he has absolutely no chance to win. I think some rest, a week at Queens, then more practice on grass and he will be fine for Wimbledon.

DP though...just another step back and clay really is a great surface for him. If he had rounded into good form he'd probably be the third or fourth favorite at RG (meaning he has no chance to win but could easily make a deep run).
