I don't understand why people are surprised Monfils WD!?! He pulls this $#!t all the time! He'll kill himself to win a match, then bows out because he's broken down! I've never been a fan of his for that reason! Baez deserved better even if he choked away the match yesterday! It's truly disrespectful to wimp out to Holger who he knew would kick his arse! Is that HARSH? Tough! Monfil's a king-size jerk! :astonished-face: :thinking-face::fearful-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth:
Only you could come up with such a crabby complaint after such an emotional win by Monfils. He put everything he had into it, and it was inspirational and thrilling. Baez did NOT deserve better if he couldn't pull off the W.

I disagree that it is normal for Gael to have a make or break win and then pull out with injury. Feel free to correct me with examples. Yes, he's had lots of injuries. But I thought the complaint on him is that he showboats more than he digs deep. Yesterday, he dug in really deep, and won the match. He's 36. That he's impaired after that match is not a shock, especially given his injury history. If you think he's a jerk, after that match, that's your opinion, but I feel sorry for your inability to enjoy something so special.

That’s a pity for Monfils, great effort to get through. I’m not sure a w/o ever really benefits the player who got it, apart from the obvious fact of going a round further. I think it disrupts a players rhythm in a long tournament, not having the match. Nothing can be done about it, of course, and Monfils is more to be pitied about it..
Asking players if they would rather have an early round walkover at the French Open over a best of five set potential 4-5 hour red clay slugfest endurance:

Most players...

Gael Monfils has withdrawn from his match tomorrow against Holger Rune citing a wrist problem, his doctor told him it was not safe to play, Rune gets a walkover to the next round.
Zverev vs Molcan will now be the night session on Chatrier
Cerundolo v Hanfmann moved to 4th on Simone Mathieu
Well my post match analysis was that Gael was going to be more than just a little jaded trying to recover. Good move by him and his team..

Maybe Gael's victory yesterday destroyed his draw pool picks .. doesn't make sense to poo poo one of the GREATEST display of 5 set shot making EVER witness IMO ..don't get why the poster is so negative against Monfils

Well that was out of his hands ( mind the pun ) his doctor told him the injury to his wrist, which is now a tear in the ligament of his wrist it would be unwise to play

That's why tennis struggled a bit when Sampras ruled! He was boring AF & didn't exactly thrill the masses except in matches vs Agassi! :face-with-hand-over-mouth::yawningface:
I viewed Pete Sampras differently..I saw the ultimate Warrior who had the ability to problem solve better than anyone prior to his retirement. I thought Andre Agassi was a moody young man with deep seeded coping issues which we later learned he was a drugged out player who was able to overcome his demons that players like Jennifer Cap wasn't so fortunate..Tennis needed a real champion like Sampras who was a true role model rather than someone who's calling card was "image is everything".

No doubt Gael did the right thing. Hand injuries are something that is very delicate and has to be treated even more sensitive than knees or arm issues. Send me a PM interested and I can tell you about a player who suffered a ruptured thumb ligament tear during match play which is nothing compared to a delicate wrist tear .

Don't get me wrong, I think of Sampras as one of the greats, but he didn't inspire viewership like a Connors or McEnroe! I'm from the old school of things so it didn't bother me personally that he was quieter and more of a gentleman like Laver, Borg, Edberg, & Federer! I'm old and no one cares what I think, but those are the facts regardless! :thinking-face::fearful-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth:

The poster is just being a buzz kill for no reason, except that he can't help himself. :lightning::toilet::fire-extinguisher::pile-of-poo::face-with-tears-of-joy:

I loved this quote from Thanasi Kokkinakis on his match against Wawrinka which went 5 sets also the Match of the Day!

" The film wasn't going very well at the start so I wasn't enjoying the movie too much. I just tried to find a way, definitely a pretty crazy ending.. I'm happy with how this movie ended in the match".

I like it. If you don't like the movie you're in, try to control how it ends.

I used to think he’s a jerk but then he showed good sense in marrying Elina. He went up in my estimation there. Tennis wise, he was an irritant, given how gifted he is, and how he always ducked out from the challenge. He Frenched it too often. But Elina has made a man of him and he’s been working hard on court for a couple years. If he’d done that when he was young, who knows?

Of all the current players he is going to be the one player who will regret that he didn't totally dedicate himself for a full 3-5 years to winning a slam. 09 RG was there for the taking and he just didn't take it seriously.

I never understood why he didn't use his weapons enough during the matches throughout his career. Guy always had serious firepower. He is tall, lean, athletic and then every time I switched on TV and Monfils was playing it seemed he was just putting balls in play very often against some mugs and every now and then there is some crazy winner or a difficult shot made, you can clearly see he is capable of doing a lot of damage and I just wonder what if he took the game more seriously.

For me, he is the most gifted french in last 20 or more years, more than Tsonga and Gasquet. Interesting how this trio of french guys turned out to have more or less similar career achievements. If I have to rate them, I'd go with Monfils 1st, Tsonga close 2nd and I was never too excited about Gasquet so he goes as a 3rd on my list.

sad that it seems like each night session has featured only one singles match so far
they start too late to have 2 matches on. And this is a move up from last year's start time was 9pm, this year is 8:30. They would have to start at 7pm if they were going to do 2 matches.

Seems like the smart money bet is Holger Rune winning the FO. He'll only need to beat one of Alcaraz, Djokovic, and Tsitsipas to win the title. Rune +950 feels like a steal here.
