I would love to see Fed play Rotterdam and clinch the number one ranking even if for a week or two because IW and Miami would be too taxing at his age. I support whatever record he can set or break before retiring.

You forgot that Rotterdam is an ATP 500 event. So, Roger does not even need to make the final. It is enough if he makes SF there.
For reaching SF one gets 180 points in 500 level events. In order to do that, Roger just needs to win only three matches in Rotterdam
as it is a 32 player event.
So, are you gaming that he reach for #1?

You're right. I thought ATP 500 SFs were worth 150...180 would do it.

I get it... but I'm mindful that this is what he did in Canada last year. I'm pretty sure Canada wasn't planned and he just did it on the spur of the moment with the glistening prize of the #1 slot. He said he just decided to go and told his team.

It was a step too far... blew his chances at Cinci and left him going into the US Open in a less than stellar state.

So, I'm not sure about Rotterdam.

Shit just got real. 155 points behind Rafa. I don't think he'll actually do it, but he plays and wins three matches in Rotterdam (and Rafa doesn't play until Acapulco) he's #1. Even not, he can still become #1 at Dubai/Acapulco if he plays significantly better than Rafa.

You forget about the key differences.

1. There is no grand slam in the vicinity (timewise) of Rotterdam to screw up by playing in it.
2. He should not go there without prep. He should do some mild prep and go there.
3. Rotterdam should be considered as a replacement to Miami in his schedule.

We should write a petition, sign it and send it to Roger.

(Break my lurking just for a moment... i bet you guys have an idea how i feel right now :D )

In all the crying, Fed just said: „you guys make me nervous. You guys make practice. You guys fill the stadiums. Thank you.“

I think this is a big part of why the No1 will never be as important as the next slam. Because Rod Laver doesnt stand there on Monday. Theres no crowds rising to their feet when the other guy drops out of a 250 tournament handing you the top spot. A Competitor lives for the moment of triumph, the world bowing to you. and its not quite the same if you dont get the immediate feedback.

(And i know this is consense here, just wanted to point out that moment and quote)

Well, Rotterdam is just two weeks away. Let us wait and see what Roger decides.

Even if Roger does not play in Rotterdam, Roger can reach #1 just by winning Dubai, even if Rafa plays Acapulco the same
week and wins it. This is because Roger is defending just 45 points in Dubai whereas Rafa is defending 300 points in Acapulco.

But, I would prefer Roger playing Rotterdam to make #1 for sure, even if it is just for a few weeks, than taking a chance
at winning Dubai (as if for some reason he cannot win Duabi, another opportunity won't arise in the near future).

^Is there any reason that Rotterdam keeps being brought up? I mean.. has Roger even hinted that it was a possibility or is this just fan-porn? It would be beyond stupid for him to add a nothing tournament like that to his schedule

It's just fan-porn. Rotterdam isn't in the cross-hairs but neither was Canada... If Roger wants another tenure at #1 then he might go for it... if he didn't learn the lessons of Canada, that is.

I didn't realize Rotterdam is just two weeks away. I thought it was closer in the schedule to Dubai so he could choose between playing one of them. Highly doubt he plays Rotterdam now and frankly he shouldn't.

Personally, I hope he plays Rotterdam. That was one of the things that did Rafa's knees in at 22 years old after winning the AO. Let's see how it works out for Roger at 36.

Nice admission there, Moxie: You're hoping Roger does himself in? Harsh

(Not that I wouldn't mind Rafa missing some time so Roger can pad his record more easily... ;-)

No, it's the people who think he should play Rotterdam I'm poking at. Even you said if he goes after #1 on purpose, he deserves what he gets. I think that's a quote. I'm offering them a little bit of real world experience about playing Rotterdam after winning the AO. I don't think Roger needs to be reminded.

Again, I don't think he'll play Rotterdam. But I do like the idea of him reclaiming #1 at his ripe old age, and think he'll do it at Dubai. It is just interesting to note that he's a virtual lock if he were to play a measly ATP 500.

No, Fed has not hinted about Rotterdam. But, even at the end of last year when Roger reaching #1 was clearly out of the equation, Roger made a statement that he is giving up on #1 at present and this does not mean I am not interested in reaching #1 again. At a suitable time, I may go for it, he said. These are not the exact words, but is the content. I need to dig out the quote for exact words.

I can’t see him going to Rotterdam—Dubai maybe.
