The Rogers Cup began back in 1892 and the tournament rotates each year between Toronto and Montréal, with the ATP staging its version of the event the same week in the alternate city. Three times it has been named the WTA's Premier Tournament Of The Year - in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
Built in 1996, Uniprix Stadium (French: Stade Uniprix) is the main tennis court at the Canada Masters tournament. The centre court stadium currently holds 11,700 spectators. The twelve courts at this venue use the DecoTurf cushioned acrylic surface, the same surface as the U.S. Open Grand Slam event.
Its core seating area is a remnant of the former Major League Baseball stadium on the site, Jarry Park Stadium, the original home of the Montreal Expos.
The Players:
A star studded field includes all three of this year's current major winners - Serena Williams, Angelique Kerber, Garbiñe Muguruza. They head a strong field although defending champion Belinda Bencic won't be able to defend her title due to a back injury.
About Montreal
Canada's second largest city has the largest number of French speakers per city outside of Paris. Situated in the state of Québec, it’s set on an island in the Saint Lawrence River and named after Mt. Royal, the triple-peaked hill at its heart.
Its 19 boroughs, many of which were once independent cities, include neighbourhoods from cobblestoned, French colonial Vieux-Montréal – with imposing Notre-Dame Basilica at its centre – to industrial Sud-Ouest and artist-friendly Plateau.
The city has a population of 1,649,519 (2011) with a metro population of around 4 million.
