Gulbis played well, really well until almost the end of the second set when he started to make some erros and he paid for that, Novak didn't miss that good chance

Nadal could have won the second set perfectly well, he had Nishi between the ropes, but at the end he showed one more time his lack of confidence and of course that bad serve but I have still the hope that he will do much better in Cincinnati and better in the USO

I've been holding onto the belief that Nadal will make it back, maybe not to Slam level but maybe like Federer is doing now.

But after watching the way Nishikori threw him all over the court makes me waver. Nishikori hardly seemed to break a sweat, while Nadal was seating buckets, had a bewildered look on his face and definitely looked the lower of the two.

Last night in the second set, I heard Novak after he had missed a backhand saying, "So slow,, so slow" and it seems he was talking to his feet. A couple points later, he said something else and was looking a them in wonder. Not sure what the problem was, but I doubt that his top priority was to go back out and play doubles.

The way he played last night, he will have a difficult time with either Murray or Nishikori.

I've read that he is wearing a special and very sophisticated shoes, maybe they don't fit so well on him :snicker

I was very disappointed in Rafa effort last night. He should have broken Kei in the very first service game. I didn't think he moved well and I think he didn't really hit his CC bh. I feel if Rafa has any chance to be a factor the 2nd week of the USO , that's the one shot in his arsenal that gives him the opportunity to be uniquely competitive against the top players. From the sounds of it, that match was like the Madrid final, where Rafa was so far off the pace he couldn't make either of the sets competitive, let alone the match. Whatever about technical shortcomings - and they exist - he seems unable to control himself in matches against top players. He wavers, shanks and generally doesn't have what it takes.

At the moment.

He's still a work in progress and I trust him to eventually figure it out...

The Madrid final had nothing to do with him being off the pace. It's the least clay of all clay tournaments and he just couldn't deal with a guy taking the ball so early. He had the same trouble against Davydenko. There's a reason Kei reached the USO final last year. He's greatly improved and only his frailty physically has been holding him back the last few years.

Sorry but Rafa all season has been about him being "off the pace", most especially on clay. Madrid gets overstated as being problematical to him, but compare his pedigree there to - oh, let's say "Andy Murray" - and you'll agree that in any year it's an upset if Murray beats him, except this year...

EDIT: I agree - sort of - about Kei, and I realise he was the better player last night, but I wasn't referring to him. I was talking about Rafa's obviously continuing problems in getting back his form, or anything even vaguely resembling it...

OK, I understand now. It has nothing to do with Kei Nishikori taking the ball so early and bossing him round the court and being greatly improved and everything to do with Nadal. Yeah, easy to forget that I guess.

Look, don't turn every thread into your own forum of hatred against Nadal. I said nothing about Kei. You and GSM want to make your agenda into some sort of rule. It's getting boring watching you pair try so hard. Sometimes just hold your tongue and listen, and others will have space to make their comments too...

I'm not disputing Nadal's poor this year but Nishikori is way better than most of the guys he's lost to this year so that loss was not unexpected one bit.

Agreed, Nishi is quality, and deserved the victory. I'm looking forward to the semi with Andy, and I hope to actually see the match. It's good to see these two players position themselves so well early in the hard court season....

Yeah, must stay up to watch it myself. 1am isn't too late at least and Novak's match is at 8pm here too so much easier to watch them both tonight.

I'll be coming home at 1am! :clap But finding a stream is getting problematic now. I think Chardy has given Novak trouble before, has he? Still can only see one winner there, unless Novak tanks... :snicker

I will be watching to see if Kei is a little flat coming out against Murray. He was so focused, so amped to beat Nadal, there may be a dip in the semi. Murray looked good from what I saw of his match. If Murray can keep his first serve percentage at a reasonably high level, he should get through this.

lol, I actually went to bed at 3am after the Gulbis and Djokovic match. Expected Nishikori v Nadal to be a good one but didn't want to stay up any longer. They were going on and on about Nadal during Novak's match though.
