I am very impressed with Caro today. Its 6-4 5-6 at the moment.
The way she plays and the way others look she plays like top 4 player in the world.
I will put only Serena, Simona, and Vika above her. The others are worse at present! Caro roars :)
I bet she does a lot of long distance running. She is in great physical shape and has very fast legs.
She is serious about that Marathon.

Set 3! You know I really feel like Serena gets really lazy in her return games at times. Like sometimes you really see her turn it on, and really try for that break ala the 5-4 or 6-5 moments and other times she just seems to shrug it off.

Serena plays only against.. her self. God knows what she is thinking during the matches. Its like she decided to create an imaginary rival in her head and she plays two players at once. Weird stuff.
She is not the happy player she was last year. She is mentally in a bad place. The problem is not her skill but her head.

That break ball that Serena saved at 0-0 which hit the net may have been the decider of the whole match. Another break would have broken Serena's spirit. Sometimes just one ball decides the faith of a whole match.

errors galore off Serena's racquet. Sharapova had about 50 in her loss yesterday

Serena is through, but she made that far more difficult than it had to be.

Well to me Caroline played some of the best she's done and IMHO she's the only one right now that can threaten Serena - congrats to her by the way:clap

That was a very good match, 3 levels higher than the Navarro-Sugar match.
I am very impressed with Caro but to be honest Serena is playing against her own demons more than anything else.
The fear of losing is terrifying Serena. She needs to chill and start smelling the roses once again :)
Its not the end of the world if she loses. If she takes it easy then she will not freeze and wont lose her nerve.
That was a free advice Serena. :)

Caro is in the best form she was in the last 3-4 years. I am very impressed.
I am sure she is running a lot of long distance running. It must be her new hobby. You could see that in the long rallies and in her stamina under pressure. She wouldnt have pledged for the marathon without backing it up. That would have embarrassed her. She is running miles every week and its great for her tennis.

I am not saying Caroline isn't playing spectacular ball right now, but I think their being friends played a significant role on how this match played out for both of them. I think this is why Maria has it right when she doesn't really make friends on tour. It is a tough outing to compete against friends.

I like Caroline, and I pull for her nowadays against most players, but, your statement "IMHO she's the only one right now that can threaten Serena," is laughable.

Like Si Si stated, it's in Serena's head.

The only one threatening Serena is Serena herself, Or you could say that Cornet and Garbine are her threat because they already beat her this year ;)

Serena has shown vulnerability, even yesterday when she was playing Lucie she showed that.
Caro played a good game today, toe to toe with Serena for 2 1/2 hours and had her chances.
Serena is the champion, she blasted 15 aces and took the match late, a few points gone the other way and this match could have ended Caro's way. It was a GREAT match!

One thing is for sure, if Caro keeps her current form, she will be a big factor this hard court season and the rest of the year.

Now off to Venus vs. Carla, lets see what the single backhander is up to.

The thing Serena has to understand is nobody fears her when all she is doing is keeping the ball in play. They fear her when she is putting pressure on them with her shots, her serve, her return and making them feel that they have to do something special to win against her. Nobody can fear what they aren't consistently seeing.

Venus does a 3 setter and wins, just like the younger Williams.
Ladies and Gents!
We will have a Williams vs. Williams!
Worth a thread of it's own?

These women are in their 30's and still meeting in later stages of tournaments after first meeting over 16 years ago.
