I HONESTLY don't think she needs to IF as the rumor says she has some sort of shoulder problem and it's not completely tip-top...

OR unless she is OK and just wants to get in more matches for the USO defense..which is understandable.

but for ME personally -- i don't put much importance to trying to ''match and break steffi's consecutive weeks as number one -- 186"

as mary carillo said.

because what is really the big deal anyway?

serena's right up there already at 182 -- four more weeks ''unbroken" hardly matters in terms of ''having proven something"
u know?

so - if there is a little problem with the shoulder -- better she rest and heal it COMPLETELY for USO - imo. practice REALLY well the week before to get her ''serving rhythm and returning rhythm" get going in time for peaking in the USO ...

STILL -- she's the mistress of her own game and timing.

and...remember/.../.... you promised -- no more hexing...you warlock!! lol
Ha ha, no more hexing :)

I think she'll want to play Cinci as a tune up for the USO. I think she's only had a handful of matches since Wimbledon. These Olympics have caused havoc to the usual tour.

hehe.

i actually lost track of many players' schedules since wimbledon -- and it's true enough that many schedules went whack from the olympics..

but u know -- it's not like they don't know it like when DAVIS CUP OR FED CUP are around. which could even be more disruptive as they're spread all over the planet and through the year - including in between majors =-

and do they REALLY get POINTS for ranking? the way i understand - olympics also earns them some points?

Great day for Monica Puig and Puerto Rico. PR had never won an Olympic medal, and now guaranteed one, either silver or gold.

INDEED -- wasn't she amazing? she took on PETRA'S big power game -- and hit back with plenty of strong shots herself -- including her serves!and i'ts not as if Petra played badly -- she played well.! but Monica played just really well!

i was so impressed!

she's flying puerto ricana flag too ! so nice for them -- because puerto rico HAS a tradition of tennis actually -- just had not quite developed it -

but i used to have an old lady as my next door neighbor in the apartment building in NYC long ago - and we used to watch tennis together in her apartment and she'd tell me lots and lots and lots of stories about the legendary players - as she used to play tennis too in puerto rico - and she said tennis was a very popular sort of upper class sport - like in the early days of tennis.

she had an uncanny knack - whiel we watched -- of majority of the time - knowing when a player would lose a point!!

she'd go "ok -- now that girl's gonna go this way and then they go that way -- ok -- right about now -- she's gonna get broken"

and it would happen! so often! i had sooo much fun visiting with her and she'd cook we'd watch tennis, lol.

Puig has been sensational in the these games. You've got to give her a shot at upsetting Angie but I'll go with what I know - Kerber to take gold.

Hingis getting a bit of grief from Tweeters for that head shot on Andrea Hlavackova in the Dubs.
really?!

oh my -- martina seemingly can't get away from some controversy !
it's almost bizarre -- her career and life being such a combination of brilliant talent and achievements coupled with these ''nasty" episodes, isn't it?

absolutely ! and if i remember correctly -- some report said she had been having injury setbacks or something like that the past recent months?

and then to find herself in the GOLD match! wow! i hope it leads her to even more improvements!

Amazing match. Easily the best match I've seen all year. Monica mowed them all down, and Angie didn't play badly. To have that kind of resolve and determination was simply outstanding. I still can't believe how fearlessly she played, and how she held her nerve. She took out Muguruza, Kvitova, and Kerber. Wow, just wow. That was absolutely amazing. Congratulations to all of the participants. What an awesome tournament.
