That would be completely the opposite of the Olympic spirit. If he played a match and then pull out, that would be acceptable. The participation is important, not the victory.

It is the Nadalites who recommend that. Nadal himself would not do it. Nadal is definitely playing both Men's doubles and Mixed doubes the best he can. It also appears at this time that he will play singles as well.

Nadalites

Its the NonNadalites who applaud his team stupidity to consistently make absolute horrendous decisions regarding his schedule. All of you NonNadalites know that there isn't a player close to be as careless and mindless management of his career schedule as Rafa. IMO it has caused him at least 3-4 grandslam titles he could have secured.

I don't think anyone disagrees that generally speaking Rafa and/or his team's scheduling decisions are often terrible. But, he wants to carry the flag, he is not going to be around in 2020 and so let him carry the flag and play as well as he could (without jeopardizing his health of course).

Rafa's team is currently impressed with his level and they actually expect Rafa to play in singles too (even though it is not certain).

Rafa's team is currently impressed with his level

the same team that was impressed with his levels of play that cosigned him to play in Madrid and Rome with a gimpy wrist:nono

I doubt any of his team were aware of the extent of the wrist injury going into those events. For example, I betcha Toni didn't know he'd be too crook to continue, by Paris. They have the best advisers and he continued to play into RG, but then withdrew on medical advice. That can happen, and his team are not at fault, because nobody is at fault. It's just another bum deal he's had. Where you and I agree, brother, is this Rio mullarkey. But you and I are fans and we're thinking of historical and highly wishful things, like him being fit for Oz, and putting in a challenge. And he's thinking of something different altogether, something quite risky too, although I saw a video of him hitting with Andy and although he wasn't bashing forehands deep into the corners, he looked okay...

GSM , I stated let the Spanish patriot carry the flag but nothing more.

Rafa carried the flag before, did he? If he did, let somebody else carry it! And if he didn't, let somebody else carry it! Federer carried the Swiss flag twice and I remember thinking, sheesh, these blokes and they baby-ish egos. Let somebody less lauded but talented in another sport hoist the flag, and get a bit of a moment in the spotlight... :nono

Thanks Carol.

I think i remember him in 2008, he was in the group of Spanish athletes, but not carrying.

Nor should he carry it, imho. He's gotten enough honours and prestige and awards in his career - deservedly so - but he should allow somebody else to have their moment, and he can't merge back into the team (alongside Garbine :basiate )...

Stan pulled out. I guess the young Rio teenage girls have one less to worry about.

Actually Nadal is playing more than singles and doubles. He's also playing mixed doubles. Glutton for punishment that fella. Do more rather than less when injured....most intriguing.

Stan wasn't scheduled to play doubles with Swiss Miss in Rio..however all she needs someone who can cover their side of the court.. She may win a medal

The doubles team gets formed after the players arrive in Rio and singles have already started. With Fed dropping out, it was expected that Martina and Stan would be playing together in mixed doubles.
Now, that too did not work out for her.

She was also supposed to play ladies doubles with Bencic. But as Bencic dropped out, she is now playing with Timea. Let us just hope that Timea does not drop out. :devil

I don't think that Rafa will go too far at the Olympics but he will carry the Spanish flag which right now is his best wish. Playing singles and doubles will be a good practice and test for his wrist with views to the USO

Ferrer says Rafa is hitting the ball and moving extremely well.
