Oh, I think she wanted to go to Beiing because all she had to do was win Beijing, and she had number 1 on lock. And, she was in the QF of Beijing, so I think the knee is a legitimate concern. I mean why would she quit 2 matches from being able to defend her title if there was no legitimate concern, and she had a shot at claiming number 1 if she defended?

Yeah, it doesn't matter where Serena is ranked if she is going to win she will always win. The other girls can't say the same thing. The thing that sucks is Maria might get the satisfaction of being number 1 without having to go through Serena to get it. I mean Serena has hardware to win, and while I would love for her to be able to defend and keep number 1, she has to do what is best for her career at this point. The silence concerning her knee is a bit unnerving at this point :/.
I think her knee is just sore...remember she had a show at fashion week straight after USA Open..most probably running around and standing up a lot.I think she never wanted to play in China..just went there to fullfil an obligation.

Serena had swelling around her knee after her q.final match I believe she didnt attend her press conference after that match.Serena from the reports I have read was going to get a MRI on her knee, which in hindsight is a good follow up,it is more a invasive procedure, gives a clearer picture if there is a problem.

I think its inflammation, otherwise she wouldnt be seen fooling around with Vika in Paris.... she could be training in Paris because she has a recent picture with Sacha and Vika having fun in Paris at a Nike event and looks happy...

Money rankings - interesting bonuses for ending in top 10 - again! - bonus is the last number:

1 Serena Williams $9,317,298 ----- $450000
2 Maria Sharapova $5,839,357 ----- $400000
3 Petra Kvitova $5,203,236 ----- $350000
4 Simona Halep $4,519,763 ----- $0
5 Caroline Wozniacki $3,372,350 ----- $200000
6 Eugenie Bouchard $3,220,929 ----- $0
7 Agnieszka Radwanska $3,195,411 ----- $450000
8 Sara Errani Italy $2,589,556 ----- $225000 (doubles)
9 Flavia Pennetta $2,398,245 ----- $0
10 Ekaterina Makarova $2,345,310 ----- $0

So you see there is a reason for players wanting to end in top 10 - again.

Here is a funny ranking - me thinks . the new road to Singapore - how can they do that when it's only the actual years results that counts - or is it from YEC to YEC - you tell me - but a bizarre ranking it is:

1 Diatchenko, Vitalia Russia 202
2 Smitkova, Tereza Czech Republic 161
3 Dulgheru, Alexandra Romania 121
4 Ozaki, Risa Japan 114
5 Chan, Yung-Jan Chinese Taipei 95
5 Mladenovic, Kristina France 95
7 Hozumi, Eri Japan 88
7 Liu, Fangzhou China 88
9 Gallovits-Hall, Edina Romania 80
10 Date-Krumm, Kimiko Japan 71

Why didn't the players with "0" next to their names did not get a bonus?

Also, is there a reason why Aggie's and Serena's bonuses are the same? Did Aggie win a major this year that I do not know about.

there is no reason for Serena to retire if she can make that kind of money year in year out...she doesnt need to twerk to make money or degrade herself on some reality show...
go Rena!

Anyone sitting at the top of the ranking with 8000 points is a sitting duck, I don't care if it's Serena.
Serena needs AO 2015 badly, that's if she wants to stay #1

I think she just wants the Australian Open title just to start her year off well. Once she gets a slam under her belt, I think that is when we see a relieved and happy Serena, and she plays well. While I think the #1 ranking has meant even more to Serena in recent months, we all know in terms of actual play that #1 means nothing. She could be ranked #30 and still mow down a field.
