I think his Olympic singles gold is gonna make him happy enough, though if he's at a loose end he might play doubles too in 2016. ;)

I too wish he had skipped Beijing - great a tourney as that was - but three events in three weeks? I'd be hoping he's looking far enough towards Oz and that nothing he does between now and season's end overtaxes him...

Beijing and Shanghai that Nadal played are two events in two weeks. Check your arithmetic. ;)

Good idea from Rafa. He should have skipped Beijing too, imo. Anyway, hopefully he'll be well and energized for WTF.

Yes, but Basle, Paris and the WTF were three events he had scheduled for three consecutive weeks... ;)

Sorry, I misunderstood you as the context was not clear in your posting.

As an aside, we don't have this problem from 2014. There is a week of
gap between Paris and WTF from 2014 (actually it was the state of affairs before).

I think Paris must be getting nervous. It hasn't been getting the attention the other MS events get. It's kind of downgraded, in some way, avoided at times, kinda like an indoor Monte Carlo but without the big name winner...

Disappointed we've heard nothing about Soderling playing Paris since the initial hint so it seems he's not healthy yet :/

I'm glad Nadal played Beijing. Thanks to Beijing, Djokovic has never EVER overtaken Nadal's weeks at #1. And I honestly didn't mind that Nadal lost the final btw. Its better that Djokovic got some of his anger/vengeance out at Beijing instead of using it at bigger events.

Incidentally, it is the only Masters with a 48 Man field. Even the Barcelona 500 has
a 56 Man field.

I actually think he should have skipped Beijing and played this. That said, now that he's played over there, it obviously makes sense to pull out of Basel. Smart decision. Rafa's playing on house money until the rest of the season, so no need to overplay. Carefully select your battles, try to be in top form for the WTF, and move on to next year.

Who is the big name winner of Monte Carlo you are referring to? Borg? Nastase? Vilas? Wilander? Kuerten? There are a lot of big name winners at Monte Carlo. It is one of the most prestigeous events outside the slams.

Exactly my point. More recently, Rafa and Novak. But Paris in comparison has few big name winners, while also suffering big name withdrawals or non-entries...

the atp should swap weeks with these two 500 tourneys..so that there is a bigger gap between paris and wtf..

but the atp want to have a 250>500>1000 progression which also happens in asia so it prob won't happen.

MC had his own famous non-entries. Roger skipped it many times in recent years

That's what I'm saying. "Paris is like the indoor MC."

But without the big name winner at the end...

Well Becker, Edberg , Goran, Sampras, Agassi , Safin Djokovic and Federer have won the paris indoors . Quite a lot of big names .

Of course its the most open 1000 event which is why its one of my favourates. I never miss a match of Bercy

That's true, tennisville, but in the last ten years Henman, Davydenko, Berdych, Nalbandian, Tsonga, Soderling, Ferrer. It's the MS that anyone outside the Big 4 has a better shot of winning. Anyhow, it's still a huge event and there's a 1000 points at stake, but I think it would benefit from not being so close to the WTF...
