Does anyone know how does the WTA decide that someone is qualified already? I'm using the live rankings site, and the info they give says Sharapova, Halep were already qualified during USO. Of course that is unofficially. But the news that Sharapova qualified today sounds strange, given that she didn't win any matches since her USO exit.

It's statistical analysis... Its based on accumulated ranking points, the remaining ranking points up for grabs, and the opportunity every other player has to gain those remaining ranking points.

Basically if a player has already qualified it means at this point in time, even if they played no other tournaments until the YEC there is no other way they could finish any lower than 8th in the race.

Yeah, I know all this, as I said, mathematically (or statistically if you want) both Halep and Sharapova qualified to Singapore during the USO, I think after round 4 they were over the cutoff, then Serena got it by going to the semis. What I'm asking is how does the WTA decide to announce officially who is qualified already? Serena was the first according to them and then today is Sharapova. This is very strange, given the fact that Maria has no additional points after USO, so what happened today that she qualified officially?

Your post said exactly what I was thinking. Well not exactly but along those lines.

They are releasing the news one at a time to have news!
At this rate, Halep should be announced later in the week.

Oh BTW,

Yeah, I was thinking it's a PR stunt of some sort, I mean the maths is the same for the WTA as for that live rankings site so...

Thanks for the welcome!

Seriously Simona, whats the point?
You promise in the video below to train hard everyday for Singapore, but when you go there you will want to have pleasure on court... you should have pleasure by WINNING Matches after FIGHTING, Not by just "being there" on court.
I know its tough life and you need balance and mental strength, but you cant forget the true life of a sports player and thats fighting for the win.
You simply lost your mind lately. I suggest a cold shower and a slap on the face to wake you up.
You were a fighting tiger in 2013, now you are just a sheep waiting for the slaughter
You were last seen on a cloud of champagne and strawberries, you are missing since then..
You dont have the power of the big girls or a big serve to save you.
If you wont find your lost fighting spirit, you will be out of the top 30 soon.
The other girls will want it more and they will beat you.

Ok then.. my Simona prediction if anyone cares.
She will be out of the top 10 soon because she doesnt understand her problem.
But then, after having "enough frustration on court", she will come back roaring to kick some butt.
The tennis talent and brains are always there. She just needs to fix her current mentality.

I predict her come back only at the Australia open 2015. Not before that.
She will hurt big time in next months in Asia because she will not come to fight.
She is living on a cloud now, not in the real world of sports fighting and winning.

Oh you meant official announcements... I mean the official announcements are just kind of meaningless right? Anyone with a calculator can find out exactly when and if a player will qualify. I would imagine for the exact answer you'd have to speak to the WTA PR department ;)

I think if anything they kind of gauge the moment to make the announcement regardless of whether it is obvious they already qualify. I mean it sounds exciting to hear Serena made it first since she was the most recent slam winner. Then they are going to announce Halep and Sharapova to help build steam for it, and so on really.

Welcome faradubii, you raise some good questions, that I personally cannot give a detailed explanation of the formula used to calculate the cut off for qualifying, but I trust the math people to do their job right ;)

What I would like to know is whether the formula used takes into consideration that only 16 tournaments are counted for the Race to Singapore. I. would think it does, but can not find any verification. Anyone know for sure?

I also am relatively knew to this site, although I have been lurking for awhile. Have fun.

Yes, only 16 tournies are counted, that is for sure.
However, if one has more than 16 under her belt, the best results would count, so if one gets a first round loss in Miami early in the year, playing an extra event late in the year in Asia can replace the low score.

Actually, the calculations are not that straightforward as you think. One has to figure
out the worst case situation of points spreading out evenly in the remaining events among
other contenders and that is tricky.

To calculate a player's current ranking or race points is easy, but to determine whether
or when they will qualify is tricky.
