Let's run a live tracker on this race, eh? As they both stand, after one match:

Andy Murray: 11385
Novak Djokovic: 10980

Or isn't it better to simply remove Andy's DC points now, and call it what it is?

Andy: 11135
Novak: 10980

ANDY LEADS BY 155 POINTS.

NEXT MATCHES:

15/11: Novak v Raonic
16/11: Andy v Nishikori

FYI.. Andy has 275 Davis cup points until they drop Nov 28.
Andy is 405 points ahead at the moment in the Live Race to YE#1.
Andy has to finish the WTF at least 280 points ahead to get YE#1.

Respectfully,

If Murray leads by 155 points, why are people saying Djoke only has to win three RR matches to regain the top ranking? If Andy wins all three, he would still lead.

This is how it works:

If Andy ties or does better than Novak at the WTF, he's year-end #1. If Novak does better than Andy, he's #1.

In other words, there are potentially four more matches. If one player wins more, he's #1. If they win an equal amount, Andy is #1.

The lopsided grouping took all the drama out of the tournament. The fact that Wawrinka is injured and Raonic is not helped balance the groups, but Djoke will kick himself if he does not get back to number one with all the help he has been given by the tennis gods during USO and London.

I don't think I even have to go get a pencil and paper to assume, Nole can lose a RR and still take over #1 by winning the tourney! Did we forget about that? :s  :dodgy: :cover

Thanks, El Dude. That is what I thought. The posters who said otherwise must be wrong.

Eager to see what happens with Murray vs Nishikori.

Correct - which is why I said "if Novak does better than Andy, he's #1." This applies to if Andy goes 3-0 in the RR and Novak 2-1, they both win their separate semifinals and then Novak wins in the final. Novak would be #1.

One interesting scenario would be if Andy goes 3-0, Novak 2-1, Andy loses the SF but Novak wins it, but then loses the final. Andy could get 600 points for the tournament and Novak 800, so Andy would be #1 until Davis Cup points come off, after which Novak would get the year-end #1.

Thank you! Love being called "wrong" periodically; then clarified! :nono  :dodgy: :cover :p :ras:

If it's Novak vs andy in the final in a winner-take-all contest that will be great. A perfect finish to the year of Novak-andy.

Novak beats Goffin in easy straights.

Next match tomorrow: Andy v Stan

The permutations are now reducing: it seems likely now that Andy will need to defeat Novak to end the season as world #1.

Guys, how are they dealing with the Davis cup points in giving the YEC no. 1 award?

I don't think they'll matter, will they?

Again, it is really this simple: Whoever goes further in the WTF wins the year-end #1. Tie goes to Andy--which can now only happen if they both lose in the SF--as he's 130 points ahead (after Davis Cup points come off).

I haven't seen anyone mention this but actually Murray shouldn't "really" have been ranked number 1 yet - at no point has he had the most points in the last 12 months, the only reason he got up there after Paris was because last year's Tour Finals points came off a couple of weeks early for some reason.

The final in play as we speak, though, so the opportunity to change that this evening.

I think it came off early due to WTF starting on Sunday maybe! :puzzled :nono  :dodgy:
