I like Caro's a lot :)

very tough draw for Caro in r2 v petka! petkovic will beat yanina and is in a very good form. petka beat dominika 2 days ago. maybe the best match in r2.

If she wants to get back on top she has to beat whoever is in play. By the way I meant her T-shirt - if you look at the text ;)

I know what you meant and if Rory :approved: then I don't mind ;)
"My" Simona worked very hard last week on a slow rubber surface which contracted her legs (her words), but in a way it was good for her mental strength which was fragile lately. Just a boot camp in Budapest :)
She has 3 days to recover now. Its hard to tell how she is gone do in Doha.
Simo won a "real war" against Svitolina yesterday. A very tough match and she showed her stuff again. :)
Svitolina is a top 20 potential, only 19 years and climbing up the rankings (38 now).

WTA Tennis is back! Its great to see the P v P match live (peng v petrova). :D Peng just won.
No Aussie heat (with all respect to the Aussies slam), no fed cups, just "pure" tennis
Venus is next on the court :)

Navratilova says that the conditions are "heavy" and the surface is slow and there is also a wind.
I don't like it at all. It favors the big hitters and Simona will not enjoy that, but its still better than slow rubber :s
Pironkova 180cm just beat easily Vinci 163cm to prove the point.
Vinci have not won any singles match in 2014! (0-5) :puzzled

It must be cool there. All the ladies are wearing long sleeves and leggings.

2 qualifiers beating out 2 Italian veterans. Both Flavia and Roberta are out in the first round.
Interesting indeed.

Hoergren, can we have today's scores on this page? so we don't have to go back and forth...

In typical fashion, Ebony Smooth drops the opener against Cetkovska 7-5

Sloane is infuriating me again. She was down a break, got it back and held until 5-6. I swear she makes the game to hard on herself. She's so talented. Matches like this could be so much easier for her I feel. But then, maybe Cetkovska is playing really well or something. And, at this point, I think it's clear that she's not the little phenom we all thought she would be. But, then again, that is not to say that I don't think she'll be incredibly successful. I think, of the girls her age, she's easily one of the best. Maybe not the best. But I only say that because it isn't proven yet who will in fact be the best. It could be Sloane I do believe. But it could be Bouchard. Or any of the other girls: Jovanovski, Muguruza, Voegele (a couple years older), Beck, Puig, or Vekic. But I guess what I really think is going to happen is that the next decade or at least the next 5 to 8 years are going to be very competitive. Azarenka and Kvitova are still young. Sharapova isn't dead yet. And then Sloane and all those girls are just mentioned are quite good and Lisicki should still be better than she is. If she could become more consistent. And then there could be still a few girls out there who just haven't showed up yet. Anyways, now that I've gone off on that tangent, back to now.

Sloane is now down 3-1 in the second set. I don't know that I see her coming back. Which is frustrating because I just wanted to see her add some points here. Any points would have been okay. Making the second round would get her some points I think. But I guess she just doesn't have it today. Or maybe, Cetkovska really is playing great. I guess I'm just inclined to think that Sloane really is the better player between the two and should be able to beat her easily and therefore is playing poorly. Here's to a comeback.

No comeback to be had Tenis. Sloane goes down meekly in the 2nd set. Final score 7-5 6-1. Ebony Smooth was terrible w/ her plethora of errors.

You know, actually, another quick thought I just had sitting here hoping Sloane will carve out a comeback. Sloane is not exactly known for coming back from the brink. And while this may not yet be "the brink" it may be. I mean, it's close if it's not yet there. But furthermore, Sloane, if playing poorly, isn't known for finding a way to clean it up or get better or just win ugly anyways. And that makes me appreciate Serena even more. From very early in career she was great at coming back. And it's because of this that she's such a great champion. I mean, literally, she has more tournament wins because of it. Lol. It actually matters more I think to have this trait when you're younger because that is probably when you're more likely to make mistakes and have off days. Yes, as you get older, injuries and fatigue (from age) cause you to lose somethings maybe. But if you're truly great, the experience that comes with playing consistently as you age helps you become better. And of course, that's what we've seen with Serena. She just plays smarter than she used to. And it allows her to win matches easier, which is what she needs now because of the aforementioned fatigue that comes with age and all the injuries (scars: mental and physical) that she's incurred over the years.
I say all that to say that while I do believe Sloane will win grand slams, it seems clear that she'll never be a Serena. I originally thought that part of the reason she won't be is because of what I talked about in my last post, the fact that I think the game is going to be extremely competitive over the next few years. But then I immediately said to myself that Serena's era has been competitive too. And she hasn't always won. Of course, Serena's era did, at the beginning especially, still lack a lot of powerful players, and she and Venus were simply able to over power a lot of ladies. But, there were certainly some women that could hang with them and did beat them and they found ways to beat them more often than not though, or at least Serena did.
Sloane has already shown that she very well may not be the best of her generation. Part of me still thinks that this upcoming generation will not see one woman dominate. Because they're all more powerful now and can get hot and beat just about anyone on any given day. But one woman will rise above and win more tournaments and lose less matches to her main rivals and to those players that get hot. And at this point, I'm just not sure it will be Sloane Stephens.
And... Serena is amazing. That is all.

Annnnnnddd while I was writing that and not paying attention to the score, Cetkovska ran off with. 6-1 second set. Wow. No doubt some terrible play from Sloane. Even if Cetkovska was great. Sloane's serve is too solid to be broken that many times if she's playing well.

Yeah just caught that after I finished writing a follow up post to my original entry. She frustrates me so much. Of course, now that I'm in excuse mode, I still remember Cetkovska's name. By which I mean, she was once ranked much higher than she is now. So I went and looked her up and she was in the top 30 back in 2011. So she's got game. It looks like she was injured last year and that's the only reason she's ranked outside the top 100.

To me Sloane just gave up in that 2nd set.I am not taking anything away from Petra.
Paul Annacone has his work cut out with Sloane.

I like Sloane's pose during interviews, but she never struck me as someone who would win a major. She has the ability, but not the heart and mind of a true champion. She gives up easily, does not fight like Serena, Vika, or Pova do. Sloane and Kvitova are similar in that way. Ton of potential, not enough consistency or killer instinct.

I said it in the last page, I say it again here.
If Genie gets past Bethanie, she will make a run here.

As for tomorrow's matches, the mentioned Bethanie vs. Genie intrigues me, so does Daniels vs. Ana.
Franny, Samantha, Karolina, Domi and Petko are to be followed as well.
