You know, actually, another quick thought I just had sitting here hoping Sloane will carve out a comeback. Sloane is not exactly known for coming back from the brink. And while this may not yet be "the brink" it may be. I mean, it's close if it's not yet there. But furthermore, Sloane, if playing poorly, isn't known for finding a way to clean it up or get better or just win ugly anyways. And that makes me appreciate Serena even more. From very early in career she was great at coming back. And it's because of this that she's such a great champion. I mean, literally, she has more tournament wins because of it. Lol. It actually matters more I think to have this trait when you're younger because that is probably when you're more likely to make mistakes and have off days. Yes, as you get older, injuries and fatigue (from age) cause you to lose somethings maybe. But if you're truly great, the experience that comes with playing consistently as you age helps you become better. And of course, that's what we've seen with Serena. She just plays smarter than she used to. And it allows her to win matches easier, which is what she needs now because of the aforementioned fatigue that comes with age and all the injuries (scars: mental and physical) that she's incurred over the years.
I say all that to say that while I do believe Sloane will win grand slams, it seems clear that she'll never be a Serena. I originally thought that part of the reason she won't be is because of what I talked about in my last post, the fact that I think the game is going to be extremely competitive over the next few years. But then I immediately said to myself that Serena's era has been competitive too. And she hasn't always won. Of course, Serena's era did, at the beginning especially, still lack a lot of powerful players, and she and Venus were simply able to over power a lot of ladies. But, there were certainly some women that could hang with them and did beat them and they found ways to beat them more often than not though, or at least Serena did.
Sloane has already shown that she very well may not be the best of her generation. Part of me still thinks that this upcoming generation will not see one woman dominate. Because they're all more powerful now and can get hot and beat just about anyone on any given day. But one woman will rise above and win more tournaments and lose less matches to her main rivals and to those players that get hot. And at this point, I'm just not sure it will be Sloane Stephens.
And... Serena is amazing. That is all.
