Heartbreaker for Gael. He played great and had MPs. I, for one, and really happy to see this real commitment he's putting into his game.

Congrats Roger! Sigh of relief for his fans. Nole fans aren't the only ones treated to rollercoaster rides. :)

Gael in full blown clown mode now.

Not completely directed at you, because you didn't start it, but that is unkind and unfair. Monfils has been working hard at being the player that people have looked for him to be, for a lot of this year, and for 2½ sets in this match he was…against Federer. He's not going to pull it off, but he put a lot of effort into it. And focus and heart. Give the guy his props.

Moxie, he was not even trying the first two thirds of the fifth set. He should be fined. He did the same at RG against Murray. Clown is kind. Utter a-hole is more appropriate... imo.

That is just it . The guy won two sets, lost two sets. Why can't he just push the reset button and think " OK, this is best of 1 now, let's focus, do the things that were working..." Everyone knows he just cannot do that and there is no reason why he shouldn't physically. It is a shame.

5 sets is never good for someone Roger's age. He worked links out a long time ago, all about going out there and playing well from the start especially at his age.

:violins:

Not actually trying to be rude, but I never get to use that emoticon. :laydownlaughing But let's be fair: tough to recover from 5 sets, but he does move on, so he gets a chance to, and he escaped with his life. Gael nearly had him.

Not a hope. Cilic's serve is massively improved and he had 19 aces today.

It's somewhat true...Cilic can also be a headcase. In addition, Cilic has never beaten Federer so that could be a factor.

However, Federer could not afford to start slow again because he will spend a lot of energy going into the finals.

Sorry Mox, have to agree. The guy is physically capable of incredible tennis, but only has one slam-semi appearance. Also gives away matches against top guys. Clown indeed.

Once Rafa loses the tourney, Roger used to sallivate and lose a set or two in his next match.
Nowadays, he does so even after he hears about Berdych loss.

Again, I say this is unkind from both of you. What about discouragement, and the mental toll. If he had the mentality of Rafa or Roger or Novak, with his talent, it would have been a different career. Nehmeth, I believe it was you liking or quoting a notion from a commentator re: Novak v. Murray that Andy has to red-line his game to hold against Novak, and it takes its toll. Same could be said of Monfils v. Roger, I should think. Gael didn't tank it. If he had more to give, I think he would have. Does anyone think he didn't want to make the next round here?

What I bolded from yours above, Murat: If it were easy, everyone would do it. Fine to say that from our couches, I'd say. YOU try doing it. :nono

^ Come on, Moxie. He won 0 games in the 5th against Murray at RG and 2 against Federer today. He clearly is crap in 5th sets and doesn't try at all hard enough or at all.

Aren't you one who thinks Roger's fairly crap in 5th sets? And you think he's the GOAT. You go in Monfils' head and tell me if he's trying or not. (Actually, you go in Monfils' head and tell me what goes on. He surely is mysterious. :laydownlaughing )

Moxie, I don't think Gael hates losing as much as the top guys. That's the problem. I do not believe for one second he is going to lose any sleep tonight. When this match went to the fifth, pretty much everyone who knows Gael knew what was going to happen. Why? It is not my fault...HE HIMSELF , with his past episodes, put it in people's minds that he is bound to crumble at this stage.

He himself said he is not an easy player to coach. I wonder why...I do not believe I am being disrespectful when I am stating the obvious: He is not the most committed player I have ever seen.

Well if you want to go down the GOAT route it's 'cos of slam count and bucket loads of other records that won't be beaten in most of our lifetimes but the discussions of Roger being poor in 5th sets were a lot different 'cos he at least won more than 2 games in 2 matches!

It appeared to me when Monfils lost those 2MPs in the 4th set he mentally and physically checked himself out of the match.

I'll take you all on…I think you're being unfair. (I refer you to my above post.) You can complain about him not being able to get across the finish-line, and I'm with you. But I think calling him a clown takes it too far. In other times in his career I would agree, but I think he's really trying to be more focused. He couldn't get TMF today, but he was focused and resolute for much of the match, and gave him a right scare. That he couldn't close? Yes, a knock on him, but he's no clown.

He was even worse against Murray at RG. Some shots it looked like he was swatting them as hard and wide as possible 'cos his best friend had backed him to lose it 6-0 in under 10 minutes with €10 million.

To you it unkind. Noted the first time and again this time. Scold away all you want from your couch.

He's still a clown. He's a total turd. He should be fined for not even trying.

The point you're missing here is that was no TMF out there and he clearly had a huge chance of winning but didn't do f**k all in the 5th that was one bit good.
