And of course this one. Why this guy never won a slam is beyond me.

See video on l'Equipe, Nole created a new shot ???

If I tried that, I'd probably throw my back out for a week.

Clearly he should ditch that awful 2 HBH of his and go with the one hander :p

Nalbandian's one was more memorable seeing as it was in an actual match.

Wow I missed that video, Nalby had a good footwork when he was young

Regarding retirements in 2016, I'm thinking more along the lines of guys like Stepanek, Haas, Nieminen, Melzer, Hewitt (already confirmed) , Benjamin Becker among others will call it quits. Possibly Youzhny too. Karlovic is old in tennis terms but seeing as his game is mostly just serve I think he'll hang around a while, but maybe not.

You probably have missed it, Nieminen has announced his retirement by the end of this season, back in June.

That's kinda ridiculously funny and brilliant, but if I was his opponent that day, I'd threaten him with violence... :popcorn

Ah. Sure did. Knew it was coming soon anyway. Michael Russel retired too after the USO. Good interview with him on tennis.com. Apparently a well liked guy in the locker room. 37 is a good age to play until and Nieminen is pushing on too. Really puts things in perspective seeing Roger at number 2 still at 34.

Any thougths for Laureus award for 2015 ?

Dojker/Hamilton/Bolt is my say. But Djoker is in good position to get it again. Londres would definitely clinched it. Suppose Golden bagel award will be his for 4th time. 11 so far, Muzz at 7.

I used to think Nole would have a "walk-about" and give up a set, but since USO, he hasn't dropped 1! He might win the YEC w/o losing a set as well; never thought I'd say it, but he's so much in control of late! He's crushing the ball from the baseline and winning points at the net more frequently! :dodgy: :clap

Tomic = compared to his fellow Aussie (Nick).

During the semifinal, Annacone was detailing why Tomic was able to keep up with Novak (at least for that set). It was a lot of fun to see those two striking the ball the way they were. Bernie should be hugely motivated by what he did. Maybe that will translate into improved fitness and movement. It would be nice if he could turn things around and fulfill some of his potential.

I personally am rooting for Bernie to crack the top 15, a.s.a.p.
I see more motivation and seriousness about his career lately and he has the talent to make it happen.
And hopefully he will put in the physical preparation during the year and break to become more fit as well, which he knows is his path towards better results.
He came a long way from ranked #124 a year ago and that is an impressive rise.

I posted a stat a while back, but it got erased somehow along with a bunch of other posts, so I'll recap it, cause I thought it was interesting: since USO 2010, 19/21 slams have been won by Novak, or the player who beat Novak. The only exceptions are FO11 and USO14.
I think this is a good argument for 2011-present being called the Novak era. He has been, literally, the man to beat for 5 years now.

Roger's stats in this regard are even more impressive: from WD04 to AO10, every single slam was won either by Roger, or the guy who beat Roger. For 23 slams in a row over almost 6 years, you had to beat Roger to win a slam. No other way of doing it. Extraordinary.

I knew that stat about Federer, but not that Novak was within shouting distance--that is extraordinary. For some reason, Nadal has never had that kind of streak in the majors--he's always been more prone to the upset or lost to folks who did not become the champion a la Tsonga or Murray. Now, all this means is that Novak and Roger had more concentrated sustained periods at the top of majors than Rafael when he was top dog. Each are now firmly entrenched in the top eight or better of all time in all likelihood.

Nadal's injuries have been the biggest reason why he doesn't have these kind of stats. It's made his career more up and down and less consistent than Novak or Roger. Not that this makes him any less of an all-time great, just one who had incredible peaks interspersed with injury, rather than a continuous flow of excellence.
