I think 1980 vs. 2008 is easily solveable: If you're American, 1980 is the greatest. If you're European, 2008 takes the cake.

Don't get me wrong: if we're going to say the 2 best matches in men's tennis in the Open Era, these are the 2. I was a Borg fan in the first one and a Nadal fan in the second. Imho, the 2008 was more thrilling. And that's saying something.

It's very lovely that tennis on the radio was able to give them some comfort, but I don't think that tells us anything about tennis, only about how one keeps themselves sane in captivity.

I think Mandela listened that radio coverage because the anticipation of the 1980 match was incredible.

That seems overly simplistic. I'm American. I was a Borg fan and am a Rafa fan. They were both thrilling matches, but I think the 2008 was the better one. Only by a bit. But yes, even more exciting.
